Bishop Stortford II v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 15 Jul 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 5 wickets

Match report A second win in two weeks against a top 4 side in Division 2A saw St Albans first XI return from Bishop’s Stortford with 30 points with the added bonus of moving up to fifth in the table after both Watford & Abbots Langley lost. As with the win against Preston the result was set up by an impressive bowling performance, backed up by good fielding. The batsmen responded to last weeks poor display with an improved performance.

Asked to bat in a match reduced from 100 to 86 overs, the hosts started steadily with Hussain the more aggressive on a pitch which avoided most of the Saturday lunchtime rain. Jacob Winfield & James Dempsey bowled well without any wickets and it took a double-change to dismiss Hussain, bowled by Simon White. Skipper, Matt Howeson, turned to Dan Foster, recruited recently from Radlett. He bowled Portas in his second over, had Smith caught by White, won an LBW decision against Bassingthwaighte and Lucas well caught by Richard O’Toole at mid-off. With White removing Palmer, the steady start of 41 for 0 had crumbled to 85 for 6. Hosts captain, Felstead was on a run of low scores (1 run from 6 innings) and started nervously. Along with Reed they firstly played themselves in before slowly opening up. The 33 partnership was broken by Foster, his fifth wicket, to a catch at mid on by Dempsey. The tail folded to the returning Winfield. His three wickets were all aided by Sandipan Chanda. Foster’s 5 for 30 is the best return by a St Albans player in Division 2A this season. Winfield picked up 3 for 28 and White 2 for 43.

After watching the England tail fold at Tea, the Saints openers set about the 125 run target in positive fashion. Jonny Hall (23) and White (21) set a platform which the other batsmen could use by scoring from almost every loose ball. Both departed in quick succession after an opening stand of 55 in 13 overs. Chanda and the promoted Winfield found scoring easier. Chanda in particular looked to score quickly which was also his undoing. After hitting Palmer for 6 he was caught next ball for 29 to start a mini-collapse. Winfield departed for a run-a-ball 16 and Howeson soon after. Tom O’Toole & Max Capaldi calmly saw Saints home with 107 balls and 5 wickets to spare.

The next challenge is a trip to new divisional leaders, Ickleford, on Saturday. Could Saints now be looking towards the promotion spots rather than the relegation places?
