St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Greenwood Park on Sat 23 Jun 2018 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Round 8 of the Division 8A fixtures brought newcomers Greenwood Park to Sandpit Lane.

Walker won the toss for Saints, and chose to bat first, anticipating a faster deck. It wasn’t long before that expectation had been disproven, with many deliveries staying as low as ever - though for good measure the odd ball jumped off a length.

Ferguson showed the outfield was fast though, blistering a few through the off side, but both openers fell LBW as the ball stayed low. Wyldes, parachuted back to the 3s on account of his early departure, looked good for a time before being bowled by a delivery that nipped back, while Huzefa's patience wore thin a little too quickly against bowling the targeted the stumps. Suddenly, Saints were 42-4 and travelling at not much more than two an over. However, Rich Baylis and Price showed admirable poise and grew into their respective innings to quieten the chatty fielding side. Having added 50, Price was then out for a well made 25, her cover drives coming to the fore. Baylis continued on his way - the slow wicket hampering his fluency - now in conjunction with Walker, who was able to slap the ball around a little in the search for runs, before falling for 26 as the overs counted down, another half century partnership. The search for a final over run surge did not quite come off, and Greenwood Park's Hussain finished the innings off with a hattrick in the 50th over. Baylis had in the mean time reached 50, and remained not out in a final total of 159 - competitive but a little under par.

Taking the field a little frustrated - Greenwood Park had decreed that a substitute fieldsman would not be allowed for the early departing Wyldes - Hay and Baylis started off well. Baylis bowled with impressive pace and good shape, but it was Hay who took the first wicket, a flier well caught by Price. Unfortunately a fired up St Albans couldn't generate the much needed breakthroughs on a wicket that seemed to have settled down, and the visitors moved swiftly on to 100, with Gray being particularly strong with his shots through mid on. Walker was able to nab two wickets and Saints sensed a chance when Price added another, Khan had different ideas though, and Greenwood Park swung their way to victory inside 29 overs.

Again, this was a decent, if not inspired, performance from the IIIs. However a 6th defeat in eight matches now makes next week's visit to Harpenden a must-win.
