St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Stoke Green CC on Sat 11 Aug 2018 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 126 runs

Match report On a day that started in the sunshine and ended in the rain, St Albans Club XI entertained Stoke Green at Sandpit Lane for the second time this season in what proved to be a high scoring match.

Stoke Green elected to bat after winning the toss and their opening pair quickly set about Saints' opening bowlers, Tom Mumford (3-0-37-0) and Lorna Harper (4-0-40-0). With opener Ravi reaching his half-century in just the 6th over of the match and 100 on the board by the 10th over, Saints' nine players were facing the prospect of a long afternoon in the field. However, the introduction of Bilal Siddique (8-0-35-2) and Tim Mumford (6-0-28-0) with the ball, combined with a guest appearance from Neil Telkman in the field, helped Saints to regain some control with only another 55 runs added by the drinks break. Both bowlers were unlucky not to pick up more wickets, a succession of chances failing to go to hand or being dropped. After the drinks break, Saints' skipper John Webber mixed up the bowling, with short bursts from Zach Tarrant (3-0-15-0) and George Pelham (5-0-44-1) supporting a very tidy spell from Waseem Siddique (7-0-13-0) at the other end. However, a regular supply of extras combined with some sloppy fielding saw Stoke Green accelerate again, with opener Ibraheem continuing to frustrate Saints as he also passed his half-century on his way to 96. A late wicket for Pankaj Bhasin (1-0-6-1) was scant consolation as Stoke Green finished on an imposing 298 at the end of their 40 overs.

With a required run rate of more than seven an over, the odds were stacked against Saints, but a fluent opening partnership between John Webber and Waseem Siddique saw them ahead of the required rate by the 10th over with 87 on the scoreboard. However, with Siddique adjudged LBW for 46 and the wickets of Tom Mumford (0) and Webber (37) following shortly afterwards, Stoke Green started to slow the run rate and put the pressure back on to Saints. It was left to Bilal Siddique to lead the run chase, which he did with aplomb, punishing the bad balls to keep the score ticking along. However, with Pankaj Bhasin (5), George Pelham (5), Zach Tarrant (4) and Lorna Harper (1) departing cheaply - the latter two run out chasing runs that simply weren't there - Saints prospects were looking as grim as the skies overhead. As the rain started to fall, Tim Mumford (0) was given out LBW from the first ball of the 29th over and with no more batsmen to call upon, Bilal was left stranded on 46 not out. Nevertheless, Saints had accumulated a very respectable 172 runs for their 8 wickets at a rate of more than 6 runs per over.

Once again, Stoke Green proved a little too strong for St Albans, but a creditable performance with the bat should give the Club XI cause for optimism, even if the bowling and fielding needs more work.
