Shenley Village IV v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 24 Aug 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 41 runs
Match report
On a glorious sunny day at Shenley both captains were keen to bat first in these conditions. Winfield lost the toss and Shenley elected to bat.
The bowling was opened by Shan Mukhtar and Josh Moore. Shan generated good pace, beating the bat and a very good first 5 overs for 18 runs. Josh initially struggled to find a good line and length and after switching round the wicket hit the right areas with his first 4 overs going for 18 runs. Shenley were scoring at a good rate and at 15 over for drinks had raced 80 for 1 and looked set for a big score, with Oscar Reeves picking up the only wicket in his good spell.
Shenley no. 3 bat played some lovely on drives for 4 and executed a perfect reverse sweep for 4 and it looked ominous for the 4s under the roasting sun. Enter Nadim and Dave Ashton who started to put the squeeze on the run rate, with Nadeem bolwing 8 straight overs for a very impressive 1 for 7 return and beating the bat several times. At the other end Ashton first removed the dangerous no 3 bat, with keeper Reuben Mc Comb taking a brilliant catch off the edge and for good measure also stumped the bat. Ashton finished 2 for 33 from his 8 and really deserved a couple more wickets, save for a couple of drop catches.
Winfield bowled out to the fnish of the 40 overs with 2 for 34, whilst Josh Moore returned to complete his remaining 4 overs from round the wicket with great effect, finishing on 2 for 21, with only 4 runs from his second 4 overs. It was hot day in the field and the 4s effort and determination was excellent to finally restrict Shenley to 147 for 9 from their 40 overs, with what looked like to be a 200+ score early on. Reuben behind the stumps was excellent, stopping potential byes and looked sharp.
Set 148 to win on what seemed a good batting track, expectations were high that the successful opening partnership of Manny and Nadeem would set a good foundation. Things very quickly came unstuck as wickets fell an alarming rate and the 4s were at 13 for 5 in only the 5th over. Credit to the Shenley bowlers and especially the young Shyam Bokhatria who had good pace and movement away from the bat as his wickets came from genuine edges to the keeper or the slip, quite unusual at this level and he finished his bowling with an impressive 5 for 12.
With an early finish looking on the cards it was time for some Boycott style batting and Josh Moore with solid defence at least slowed the wickets. At the other Dylan Laird in his 4s game advised the skipper his style was aggressive!, maybe not want the situation needed. Dylan sure enough then played an aggressive cameo hitting several well-timed shot to long on, including the first 4 for Saints and lifting the mood a bit. Finally perishing on 12 runs, Dylan helped the score to 34 for 6. With Shan Mukhtar our for the fourth duck of the innings, Winfield then joined Moore in the middle. Whilst not exciting to watch the pair defended or left wide for several overs as the score nudged forward and Shenley started to loose some energy in the field. Moore then started to be aggressive on anything loose, collecting 4s and when Winfield departed the score had moved to 78.
With Moore well set, he continued to take runs off anything off line and when last man Ashton dispatched a huge 6 to take the 4s over 100 a result seemed still possible. However, it was not be a Ben Stokes game but huge credit to Josh for finishing on 44 and applying great application to help Saints reach a more respectable 106 all out in the 33rd over, a loss by 39 runs and a fair result to the better team.
This was a good fighting effort from the 4s, with only 3 players from the previous week playing and excellent contributions from the Colts player Reuben, Dylan and Oscar.
