Berkhampstead III v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 07 Sep 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost 5 wickets

Match report On a very chilly and windy afternoon for the last game of the season, Winfield lost the toss again and 4s were put into bat. Currently in 3rd place, the 4s needed a win to secure that position.

Manny and Charlie opened the batting, with the young Berko bowler generating a good pace which Manny took a liking to with anything slight off stump, cut away. This set the tone for Mannys innings, playing a number of very nice cuts and with a very hard and fast outfield led to a number of 4s and only the excellent fielding of Berko on the downhill boundary prevented quite a a few more. At the other end Charlie perished quickly and Faz joined Manny hoping continue their previous partnership success. Just as Faz started to find his rhythm it was another run out between the two that led to his departure and Zach Tarrant joined with the 4s at 28 for 2 and a lot to do. Zach and Manny then set about a partnership of almost 100, Zach looking very assured with a number of excellent shots round the wicket and Manny racing on to 86 before chopping one on to his stumps, when he looked set for a hundred and Zach finishing with an excellent 41,

Kev Ralfe joined proceeding for his first league game of the season and came in with a solid platform set and together with Nadeem pushed the scoring along with a number of 4 and both dispatching fine 6s over long off. Kev finished on 31 and Nadeem 28 not out to take the 4s to 211 for 5 off their 40 overs and a very good effort all round by the batters.

Saud and Josh opened the bowling and both generated good pace beating the outside edge several times. Josh was particularly unlucky as the edges flew between keeper and slip/gully to go for 4s. Josh finally took the first well deserved wicket and this brought the Berko no 3 and keeper G Lewarne to bat in what to prove the match winning innings. With a very aggressive and agricultural style he proceeded to smash anything from middle stump generally towards cow corner area and lived a charmed life with a number of shots falling between fielders or taking the edge towards the 3rd man area. All the bowlers tried different tactics but with the very fast outfield the run rate accelerated. Special mention to Charlie's fielding on the downhill boundary, where he was kept on his toes and saved a large number of runs with several excellent stops.

Bowling was rotated to try and find a breakthrough, but no bowler was really able to take full control and despite a few wickets (Saud 1, Nadeem 1, Winfield 2) with the no 3 bat set, the game was in Berko's favour. The winning runs came in the 39th over with G Lewarne finishing on 114 not out and very good chase by Berko. Saud finished with a very tide 1 for 18 from his overs, whilst most of the other bowlers had much less economy rates.

This result and others in the league left the 4s to finish in fourth place just 4 points behind Watford. Everyone felt a bit flat after the result, but over the course of the season to finish in a very strong fourth place in the table was a good season and fair reflection of much improved 2018 season. With a core group of players available and some very strong colts coming through the 4s have the capability to push for promotion next season.
