St Albans 3rd XI arrived at Northwood to be presented with one of the greenest pitches seen in recent memory. Stand in Skipper Jamie T won the toss and promptly inserted the opposition, hoping that the green top pitch and overcast conditions would see the 3’s make early inroads.

Dan Baylis and Joe Button opened the bowling and bowled well with pace and accuracy, beating the bat on numerous occasions. However, the pace on the ball also allowed the runs to flow.

Uttam Vijender came on and bowled with a tight, troubling line and was rewarded with wickets. Skipper Jamie T also bowled well, however over the course of the innings Northwood batted with excellent power and confidence and set an imposing total of 262.

After a very impressive and much appreciated tea, St Albans lost early wickets and were struggling at 30-3. Opener Andy Rudlin (41) formed small partnerships with Stuart Murray (15) and Richard Bayliss before falling just after drinks leaving Saints on 120-4.

Baylis (57) and Vijender (36) then formed an excellent partnership, rotating the strike well and punishing the bad ball, taking St Albans up to 200. However, having conceded such a big first innings total, St Albans were always behind the rate and wickets fell regularly in the last few overs.

Murphy briefly raised morale with a trademark first ball ramp shot over the keeper, but ultimately the 3’s fell short with 228. A good effort by all against one of the stronger sides in the league, but also room for improvement. On to next week.
