Stevenage 1 v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 13 Jul 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket

Match report On a weekend of close finishes who did it better England or St Albans?

Capaldi lost the toss and St Albans started their day in the field. White (1-34) and Winfield (1-26) opened up and bowled with great control and were too good for the Stevenage batsmen on numerous occasions. White in particular troubled the batsman with multiple very tight lbws turned down.

It took the introduction of Joe Regan (3-62) to get the first wicket with a long hop being pulled straight to Howeson at mid wicket. The trick was then repeated a couple of overs later with another long hop finding its way down to Coulman who took a good catch on the fine leg boundary. Joe was ably supported by brother Jamie who bowled a very tight spell and saw his 5 overs only go for 13 runs.

It was then down to the Brown brothers from Stevenage who put on 106 runs for the third wicket as they knocked the ball round the park and hit the bad ball to the boundary. It took until the 35th over for St Albans to get another wicket as Capaldi (2-36) managed to get both brothers towards at the end of his spell.

St Albans closed out the innings well with controlled bowling from White and Winfield who has managed to learn the art of thinking whilst on the pitch. A great team effort saw that Stevenage set a target of 226 to be chased down.

The St Albans innings didn’t start in the best possible way as after three overs no runs were on the board but two wickets had been lost. As with last week it was the Regan brothers who started to rebuild. Both batsman looked at ease with fearsome hitting was mixed with deft touches and this week they seemed to have sorted out their calling.

After 77 runs had been put on Jamie (37) was unfortunate to mis time a drive and pick out long on. This bought another youngster O’Toole to the crease and another partnership developed with Joe going onto reach his second consecutive half century. However, after looking totally in control Stevenage bought on spin and Joe (66) and O’Toole (21) fell in quick succession with 89 runs still needed.

A partnership was what was needed by St Albans and Coulman and Howeson got another 22 runs before St Albans now in control contrived to try and throw the game away. Coulman was run out pushing for a second run before Howeson decided to try the same fielders arm out and was comfortably run out. Once Winfield came and went for the third duck of the innings, Caley was then the third run out of the innings which left St Albans needing 32 runs for the last wicket.

Capaldi who had been at the other end for the collapse took 16 off one over as he picked his moments to lower the runs required. At the other end Kendel was ensuring that he would not give his wicket away. With some sensible running and the odd big hit St Albans needed 2 from the last over. Capaldi managed to hit the first ball of the last over for four getting St Albans over the line in a game which should have been a lot more comfortable to win.

With two good wins in a row St Albans will look to build on to next week.
