St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v St Margaretsbury I on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 71 runs
Match report
In a welcome change from the two previous weeks, the 1st XI were treated to glorious sunshine at Clarence Park in what could have been a glorious day for the club on its 125th anniversary weekend. However, the 1s again conspired against a clean sweep for the club in another disappointing performance against St Margaretsbury.
Losing the toss and being put into the field, St Albans started poorly, with the score 30-0 off 6. Without the dependable White to call upon, Capaldi (10-2-32-4) brought himself on and bowled with admirable control throughout. At the other end, Roche (10-4-22-2) put in one of his finest spells in the season, even picking up two wickets to helpfully discredit his “I’m the unluckiest bowler in the league” chat. Roche’s impressive opening spell was even despite his laughable fitness, which included the rarely seen ‘bowler having to wait at the top of his mark to regain his breath’ moment.
With Roche and Capaldi bowling well in tandem, the 1s really brought the game back into control, picking up three wickets, including an unlikely slip catch for Roche off Capaldi. St Margaretsbury put on a solid fourth wicket partnership despite the good bowling of Seagrave who impressed again, despite being “very tired” after being stuck in a “Youtube loophole” the previous evening. Coulman conspired against Seagrave picking up the wicket of the St Margaretsbury number 3 (who made a very patient 61) in spectacular fashion, effectively rendering the 1s ‘fine of the year’ competition redundant. Coulman not only dropped the catch at deep square-leg, but also managed to fumble the ball, before then accidentally throwing the stationary ball over the boundary for four (though it should have been five).
After a comically bad first over from Hall, he produced the breakthrough of the opposition skipper, a leg before so out that the batsman was basically walking. Not long after, Joe Regan polished off his golden arm to remove the other set St Margaretsbury batsman. St Margaretsbury’s number 8 provided some frustrating resistance before Capaldi nicked a few late on, the final score 204-9 off 50 overs.
Fortunately for the already excessive length of this report, there was very little to say about St Albans’ chase of a very gettable score. Seagrave battled hard for his 21 at the top of the order on a slow wicket with some variable bounce, but this was the second highest score of the innings which included some poor dismissals. O’Toole (44) batted with great maturity, especially given his earlier claims that he was “out of nick” and going to “just swing at everything”. However, he really did lack any support, even with a very deep St Albans batting line up. The fact that a part-time off-spinner took 6-26 leaves a lot for food of thought for the 1s, especially given that that the two top scorers were the two youngest players! The 1s travel away to Abbots Langley next week, hoping to make up for their narrow defeat earlier in the season.
