Rickmansworth CC v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 03 Aug 2019 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 12 runs

Match report It's a phrase as old as Caley or Mardle. Catches win matches. And once the Second XI worked out how to do so at Rickmansworth on Saturday it lead to a win which up to the first drinks break looked unlikely.

Set a tricky 196 to win on a pitch which the home umpire warned would be a little erratic, the openers put on 73 before they were parted. Shah in particular rode his luck in making 39 before Amit removed him LBW, a decision which he chose to let of the town and some of West Watford know he was not happy with. Praise to the first change bowlers too. Amit Rajani & Adam Murphy, who was often reminded of his U19 figures from the previous evening, bowled straight through for combined figures of 3 for 44. Their efforts, along with catches from Phil Caley & the first of the afternoon from Dom Watkins, pushed the run rate beyond 5.5 on a pitch where fast scoring was risky. Saqib Malik, Ashish Dean and Dan Rosson were tasked with the the closing overs with 97 required from 17. Dean dismissed Alishah Hussain to a good catch in the deep by Dan Rosson but with boundaries hard to find the rate kept rising. Farhan Hussain went big only to find Murphy loitering by the scorebox. Khan tried to follow suit only to pick out Watkins (number 2) who took his third, and best catch (and easily best celebration) to remove Shah. With 13 required form the last, James Rosson stumped Latif to bag the 30 points.

Earlier, Saints batted in a similar manner. A quick start, particularly the 36 from Tom Wyldes, was stymied by the slower bowlers. The curious run out of Wyldes (Nav Ahmed ran, stopped and walked off only to pass Tom before the bails were removed) may never be repeated. Saqib (27) & James Rosson (30) tried to push the run rate but fell in doing so. Phil Caley & Amit Rajani picked up what proved to be 34 useful runs from the last 26 balls.

A good 30 points to gain given the situations faced during the match. The leaders in 5A both lost which leaves the Seconds 51 points from a promotion place. Bentley Heath, in fourth, visit Clarence Park next weekend. Final thanks to Clive Maynard for umpiring. Did anyone catch the name of the scorer...
