St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 runs

Match report On the sunny mid-morning of June the 9th, the St Albans women’s (and girl’s) team took on a tough Abbots Langley side. Having lost by a “large” amount in our last encounter, Helen O'Byrne, the captain, opted to field first. St Albans were very quick and sharp in the field, with a lot of improvement showing. A wicket was taken in the first over, thanks to an outstanding catch from Helen as the ball sped through the air. However, wickets were not rare occasions, with plenty of batters falling victim to St Alban’s bowling. Celeste Jones was consistent- and very fast! And her mum, Trish Jones, showed everyone where Celeste gets it from, with countless stops in the field, alongside accurate bowling. With two run outs from Charlotte, great wicket keeping from Hannah Bentley and Helena Loan, consistent fielding by Michelle Mallabone and even a wicket from Emma Nelson, Abbots Langley were restricted to 58-7.
In reply openers Trish and Celeste Jones, set a solid score of 17. This was followed by Emma and Charlotte Nelson, who between them had a great partnership in their 4 overs and raised the score to 54. Michelle Mallabone and Helena Loan up next, and they stood their ground against some county bowlers. Now on 59 with one pair remaining, surely the game was ours? Apparently not according to Abbots Langley, who cruelly took two wickets on the last two balls of the match, after a determined performance from last pair Helen and Hannah, and St Albans finished on 53-8
