St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Crouch End on Sat 20 Jul 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won

Match report Following a rainstorm of almost biblical proportions in St Albans the club XI took a fairly relaxed attitude to their game against Crouch End. After been reminded by the skipper that playing on the astro meant that we did not need to worry about pitch inspections the game got underway only a few minutes after the scheduled start time. James and Shan bowled a miserly opening spell, each conceding only 10 runs off their 5 overs. Saud and George then took over, again keeping the runs down. Both picked up wickets, the best a stumping off George which, whilst perhaps not executed in quite the way envisaged by the textbooks, was highly effective. Tom and Sam came on after drinks, again keeping things tight with Sam picking up 2 wickets and Tom unlucky not to get one as well, Umar and Kevin completed an excellent all round bowling performance with two wicket for Kevin, who turned the odd one square. The bowlers were well supported in the field by a number of good catches and people putting their body on the line.

A total of 135 felt eminently gettable and Umar and John got us off to a good start, John in particular hitting the boundary in between trying a little too hard and almost swinging himself off his feet. With both openers falling in relatively quick succession it was left to Sam and new boy Aiisdair to rebuild and they went about the job solidly putting on 30 for the third wicket. When Sam was a little unlucky to be run out on 13 Kev Milton came to the crease and sparked the most controversial moment of the day. Facing the hostile pace of a bowler who looked no more than 10 Kev took a big swing and was cleaned up. The umpires conferred and decided the ball had bounced three time and called no ball, depriving the youngster of his first senior wicket. Kev departed soon after, still looking a little sheepish, to bring Tom to the wicket. After a nervy first couple of overs Tom grew in confidence, hitting two cracking 4s and intelligently rotating the strike. Having almost seen us home Alisdair (36) was strangled down the leg side leaving time for a brief cameo from Shan (15 not out) including one huge 6 to see us home. A real team performance with contributions from everyone in the side and a very satisfying 5 wicket win.
