St Albans Cricket Club Lost by one wicket

Match report St.Albans won the toss and chose to bat on what looked like a very good pitch for batting combined with short boundaries both of sides of the wicket so a high scoring match was on the cards. Unfortunately only Zach West managed to take advantage of the conditions as 3 of the top 4 returned to the pavilion with little to show. Zachary Tarrant was unfortunate to be on the end of a quick yorker, Najib left a straight one only to see his off stump castled and Fergie was LBW to a injudicious decision.

At the other end Zac was moving along nicely and was assisted by Umar Mukhtar who scored 14 before being bowled by RNVR's first change bowler. This brought Tom Wilton to the crease and with opening bowlers having completed their opening spells the pressure was released. Zac and Tom both played aggresively and Zac looked odds on to complete his half century before the dreaded curse from the sidelines struck. An innocuous comment from an unnamed member was followed by Zac smashing a full toss to the fielder in the deep and being caught for 48.

This bought George Pelham to the crease and he supported Tom Wilton who went on to complete his half century. After George was out for 17 wickets started falling regularly and all eyes were on Tom to reach his hundred. Unfortunately the return of RNVR's opening bowler (and the curse from the sideline) led to Tom being caught by gully for a well made 78. The tail were unable to wag and St.Albans finished on 187.

In the field the RNVR top order looked like they were in a hurry to finish the match off and get into the bar. Maroof (56) was especially brutal and RNVR raced to 97 for the loss of one wicket after 15 overs. St.Albans however clawed their way back into the game led by Shaan Mukhtar with figures of 5-50 with 4 wickets bowled and one caught and bowled. He also managed to hit the stumps on 2 other occasions however was called for front foot no balls (a plague throughout his spell).

Tom Bently helped to stem the flow of runs and the introductions of Zac West led to a further 3 wickets. Pelham got the crucial wicket of the skipper Masey to leave St.Albans on top at 152-8. However Kumar (33 not out) and Dee (19) led RNVR to the finishing line before Zac West took the ninth wicket with RNR requring 2 to win. The next over Kumar struck the winning runs with just over 2 overs left.

A fine effort by a very young team whose heads could have dropped following the initial attack but they stuck at it and in the end were a tad unlucky to end up on the losing side.
