St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Boxmoor III on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 10 wickets

Match report St Albans 4XI eased to a convincing victory in their first match of the delayed 2020 league campaign.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Saints' bowlers put in a disciplined display, backed up by some athletic fielding, to restrict the visitors to just 102 runs from their 40 overs. O'Grady set the tone with a frugal opening spell that yielded two early wickets. The third wicket partnership threatened to get Boxmoor back on track, but once broken by Fattah, a rash of wickets followed. Fattah picked up a second, while Tarrant bagged three in a spell that challenged the batsmen throughout as Boxmoor subsided from 48-2 in the 15th over to 53-7 in the 19th over. The drinks break looked like it had halted Saints' progress, as Boxmoor's eighth wicket pair added 43 runs despite a miserly spell from Dugmore that yielded just 3 runs from 5 overs. Melling finally broke the partnership in the 36th over and picked up a further wicket in the final over as Boxmoor limped to the end of their innings.

During the first innings, the Sandpit Lane wicket had shown some evidence of variable bounce, so there was good reason for Saints' batsmen to be cautious, despite the relatively modest target. They needn't have worried, however, with the wicket seeming to flatten out as the lack of pace in Boxmoor's attack left them unable to find those unpredictable spots. Openers Nisar and Tarrant batted serenely from the start, picking up regular boundaries and picking off singles with ease. Neither batsman gave any real chances and none of the bowlers ever really threatened, so it was no surprise when Saints reached their target of 103 on the first ball of the 20th over. The only point of debate was whether either batsman would make a half century. In the end, Nisar achieved that accolade with just a few balls to go, with the innings taking him past 5000 runs for St Albans, while Tarrant was left just short on 45 runs.

It was a fine display all round from St Albans and a good platform on which to build for the remainder of the season.
