Potten End II v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 15 May 2021 at 12.00
Match was Abandoned due to rain

Match report The 4XI travelled to Potten End in the drizzle hoping to get a game on and game buoyed by reports of decent covers and good drainage.

Arrival at the ground coincided with a sharp shower though and the start was delayed without over deductions (yet).

When the rain eventually stopped the covers were rolled off to reveal a surprisingly dry and well-prepared wicket. Potten End won the toss and decided to bat first to make the best of the good track.

St Albans opened with the raw pace of Joey Curran who struck in his first over (after another rain break 4 balls in) removing one of their openers on nought with a sharp delivery, which found the edge on its way through to the keeper.

Raeburn, the Potten number 3 then came out and in his usual aggressive style punished anything in his arc on his way to 50.

Amongst a flurry of dropped catches St Albans bowlers kept chipping away with wickets at the other end with Saud Fattah, Prath Khatavkar, Dulon Ahmed and Joey sharing 6 between them. The opposition had reached 117 (including a disappointing 25 extras) after 30 overs when rain stopped play. The number of overs lost during this stoppage meant their innings was finished.

By the time St Albans came out to bat the various equations had been thoroughly discussed, calculated and cross referenced with the league handbook. St Albans required 110 off 28 at just under 4 an over.

Manny started well and saw off the opening bowlers. After 10 overs St Albans were in control of the game at 48 for 2. Potten then made some bowling changes to bring on frugal slower bowlers who conceded just 10 runs in the next 5 overs. With dark clouds rolling ever closer and their team behind the rate, St Albans were encouraging their batsmen to run harder and hit further! The message was heard and a massive six put St Albans back ahead of the rate at the end of the 17th.

The rain was starting to get heavier though and eventually stopped play in the 19th with the game washed out an agonizing 10 balls short of a Saints victory on run rate!

It was one of those days when despite the best will and efforts of both teams and the groundsman the British weather could not be beaten.
