Watford Town IV v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 05 Jun 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 69 runs

Match report 4s win by 69 Runs

The Batters batted and the Bowlers bowled....

Fresh from rain on Friday, skipper Winfield was keen to bowl first on a damp wicket and slow outfield, but lost the toss and 4s were put into bat.

On a lively wicket and the bowling doing a bit, Sammy and Charlie opened and both fell early leaving the 4s at 7 for 2 in the fourth over. This brought Zach and Najib to the crease who both played very solid cricket, defending well and taking on anything loose. This was to be a key platform as they built a 50 partnership before Najib fell LBW, whilst Zach continued (with a few carefully placed shots) with incoming bat Naveed. After a careful start for 65 runs in the 25th over, Nav sensed the need to accelerate and opened his shoulders with some powerful hitting.

Zach fell for a well made 29, whilst Nav continued his shots and fell to a catch at long on for 33. Nadim, James and Glenn continued the tone from Nav and played short cameos of shots and finally Tim played out the last 3 few overs with Nadim for 20 runs, made by some hard running which had Nadim blowing a bit!. The 4s finishing on 155 for 7 in their 40 overs was a very good batting display, with a good all round contributions, application and pace at the right time.

Saud and Joe where given new ball responsibility and had a few loose initial overs allowing Watford to 20 runs in the first4 overs. Joe soon found his rhythm, bowling with great pace that was too much and beating the bat on numerous occasions. His first wicket was a fast bowlers classic nick off the edge to keeper James and then he continued to beat the bat regularly, had 2 edges pass through the slips before finishing his opening spell with 2 for 14, which set the tone for the fielding and had also really slowed down the run rate.

Saud persevered at the other end, had a couple of edges and finished 0 for 23 from his 6 overs. This brought the introduction of senior pair of Glenn and Tim. Glenn bowled his usual high tempo of a few steps and was troubling the batsmen, though was getting very grumpy from some very harsh leg side wides (think T20 standard). This had Glenn riled and finished his feisty spell of 8 overs 3 for 23. At the other end Tim kept a tight line and length making runs hard to come by and clean bowled 2 players and then had the Watford captain, who was looking well set, caught by newly positioned Sammy at mid off.

At the end of the Glenn & Tim spell, Watford slipped to 83 for 8, leaving a chance for Zach to clear up the tail, which he did courtesy of a full bunger and chaotic run out. 25 harsh extras was to be the highest score for Watford. This was a good bowling and fielding display with lots of chat in the field (thanks cheerleader Sammy) and the only drops very sharp behind the wicket chances.

A good all round display, with batters and bowlers doing the role asked of them.
