Harpenden VI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 14 Aug 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 48 runs
Match report
The 4XI travelled to Rothampstead Park, Harpenden looking to return to winning ways after the cancellation of the week before. An overcast setting and some unknowns about the pitch meant that the toss was a tricky decision for both sets of players. Despite this, skipper for the day Lowe duly won the toss and decided that St Albans would have a bat.
It proved to be a strong decision as openers Grant and Parkinson got off to a swift start, both scoring boundaries in the first few overs. Parkinson would fall on 9, chipping a simple catch to the fielder. Nisar joined Grant at the crease and was able to keep the momentum going. The numbers 2 and 3 combining for a 67-run partnership that would set the foundations for the innings. Grant in particular looked classy whilst batting, scoring an impressive 44, while Nisar made 31 himself. There would be a slight wobble for St Albans, with a few quick wickets falling including both Nisar and Grant in quick succession along with Lowe, who made a quickfire 9 before edging through to the keeper. This meant that Tarrant and Davey arrived at the crease with some rebuilding to do, despite the good foundation. The two built a strong partnership, starting solidly but then opening up with some more fluid shots. They would bat nearly 15 overs before Tarrant departed for a well made 23 and Davey followed soon with 43. Webber would bash a quick fire 20 to finish the innings, the 4th XI ending on an above par 193.
After a quick break for tea St Albans took to the pitch in high spirits looking for early wickets to kill off the game and allow an early visit to the bar. Arif and Deshpande would take the new ball, both bowling tidy spells with good use of both swing and seam movement. The first wicket would come from Arif in the 11th over, an excellent catch on the boundary by Tarrant. The first change saw Khatavkar and Ashton brought into the attack, showing very different styles of bowling. Prath bowled with some very good pace, picking up two wickets, both caught in the gully by Davey. Conversely, Ashton bowled with the flight and guile of an experienced spinner in an eight over spell which yielded one wicket but could easily have been more.
Ashton and Khatavkar would be replaced by Davey and Nisar, with another spin/seam combination utilised by captain Lowe. Shorter spells for these two bowlers would yield a wicket each and expose the tail of the Harpenden line up. The surprise of the day would then see Parkinson introduced into the attack to bowl his part time legspin. His spell included some good variation and was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Tarrant would be the final bowler used, picking up the last wicket to fall in a three over spell. The Harpenden innings would finish well short of the required 193.
A 48-run win was well deserved for the 4th XI team, who can all be proud of their contributions. Particular highlights were the spirit in which the game was played, Grant’s opening innings and Khatavkar’s bowling spell. Across the team there were good fielding performances, with good catching and ground fielding throughout. The 4XI back to winning ways ahead of the visit of Markyate & Luton Town.
