Chorleywood 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 28 Aug 2021 at 12.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report A heavy 8 wicket defeat to Chorleywood meant that the 1s missed out on the opportunity to go into the promotions spots however are still left with a chance of promotion with a large win over promotions rivals Abbots Langley next week.

Upon winning the toss on what looked to be a good pitch St Albans batted and soon realised the pitch wasn’t as good as it looked. Patience was needed on the pitch as it was a little bit two paced and the top order all perished trying to force the game.

At 49-4 St Albans were in danger of not posting a competitive score however a fifth wicket stand started to get a bit of stability in the St Albans innings. The bowling was disciplined and the early loss of 4 wickets meant the batting was circumspect.

Another couple of quick wickets were lost with Jerome quickly followed by Mude returned to the pavilion and a score of under 100 looked potentially on the cards.

The 8th wicket showed the only partnership of note for the innings with White and Capaldi putting on 57 runs putting the bad balls away to the boundary. Although the scoring rate didn’t increase too much as batting 50 overs was forefront of mind at the half way stage St Albans thought the 166-8 was competitive.

The fact that St Albans only took two Chorleywood wickets doesn’t tell the full picture. May struggled with his run up one end and at the other there were some very questionable lbws turned down to the disbelief of both the fielders and batsmen. If these were given it might have been a very different second innings.

Seagrave and Baylis were then introduced and at this point batting looked really tough. However Chorleywood survived with numerous plays and misses, inside edges and outside edges falling short.

Seagrave managed to get both the openers out and St Albans sniffed an opportunity. However, an 103 run partnership saw Chorleywood home despite a valiant bowling effort some days you have to take your hats off to the batsmen.

An exciting final day shootout is on the cards and one which St Albans will hope to come out on top of!
