St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Broxbourne 3XI on Sat 11 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
St Albans 4s 209 for 8 off 40 overs loose to Broxbourne 3s by 4 wickets as they score 212 for 6 off 39.4 overs.
Performance Highlights: James Grant 50
The 4s hosted undefeated Broxbourne at Sandpit Lane on a lovely sunny day. Skipper Winfield lost the toss and 4s were put put into bat.
Broxbourne had 5 colts in the team, including the 2 opening bowlers, who both had very good pace, but often bowled too short and the experienced opening pair of Dean and Grant were to capitalise, scoring a number of fours and keeping the run rate at 5 an over for the first 10 overs. Both players looked settled, taking many quick singles, but one small hesitation led to the run out of Dean for 15 and the opening partnership of 49. Joshua Kleiner Mann joined Grant and was watchful, but soon demised, bowled and Khan joined Grant in the middle. The change bowlers did not have the consistency of the opening pair and Grant and Khan accelerated the run rate with a flurry of fours, allowing Grant to reach his 50, but then immediately being bowled just before drinks, with Saints 111 for 3.
A score of 200 seemed possible after drinks and runs came consistently, Khan fell for a quick 40, Mosky and Vijender looked settled, then both fell for 17 and respectively. After Davies was out, Arif, Nathan Kleiner Mann and Winfield all helped keep the runs flowing in the final few overs as the 4s finished on 209 for 8 off their 40 overs, which felt a very healthy score to defend.
New ball duties were given to Nathan Kleiner Mann and Sam Davey. Nathan struggled for consistency, bowling the odd good nut, but the Broxbourne openers latched on to the loose balls. Davey secured an LBW of the opening bat in his second over and the new batter was quite aggressive as the run rate went at over 5 an over in the first 10 overs. Davey finished his 6 over spell with a very respectable 1 for 22 and veterans Arif and Winfield came on first change. Winfield took the wicket of the dangerous bat and at drinks Broxbourne were 100 for 2, the game finely poised.
Arif bowled his usual nagging line and length, unlucky not take any wickets and finished his 8 overs wicketless for 25. At 30 overs Broxbourne were 143 for 2 with two well set batsmwn. Moksy and Nathan swapped keeping duties at the half way point and Moksy was able to trouble the bat and finally took a wicket when Broxbourne were 176. At the other end Prath Desphande took the opening bat with a quick stumping by Nathan KM (who had a very tidy game behind the stumps) and with 6 overs remaining Broxbourne needed 23 runs. To bring some variety to the bowling Dean joined Moksy to bowl out the final few overs of the game and both bowlers collecting a wicket in the final few overs, leaving to a very tight finish.
Unfortunately some of the 4s missed fielding, allowing extra runs and boundaries, plus 8 over throws put the balance of the game to Broxbourne and they completed the run chase with a 4 in the 39.4 over. Credit to Broxbourne and their colts that all made contributions to an impressive run chase. The 4's should have defended 209, but at least we collected 15 loosing points.
