Old Cholmeleians II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 16 Jul 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 161 runs

Match report The 3s enjoyed a commanding victory over their Division 8A foes, Old Cholmeleians.

On another warm, sunny day, it was imperative that the skipper won the toss, which he duly did - bat first was the result.

Very quickly the new opening pair of Street and West found their stride on a wicket that showed some variable bounce, demanding a watchful approach. Street got going early with some elegant cover drives. This seemed to lure West down the same path, and he quickly overtook Street’s tally, striking powerfully to the boundary. After a string of hot days it barely needs to be mentioned that the outfield was lightning fast.

Old Cholms are always hospitable hosts and now their hospitality seemed to extend to the bowling on offer as by and large it struggled to maintain a decent line and length. The opening partnership raced towards a hundred before Street was unlucky to have one stay low, and be adjudged LBW for 28, the pair having added 99.

West and Islam joined forces and put on 40 before Moksy’s departure. The run rate was comfortably above 8 an over as Wilton arrived at the crease, and a further 94 runs were added in partnership with West. In the face of some improved bowling, and weary in the heat, West’s pace had slowed as he neared a century. It wasn't a complete surprise to see him dismissed for an excellent 97, agonisingly just shy of a landmark ton.

Church played the perfect knock, easily finding the boundaries to compile 32 in quick time, while Wilton finished on 67, another great innings that mixed firm strokeplay with well judged singles. A final flourish saw Saints cross the 300 mark, with a six from the skipper, quite a tally in 40 overs.

Realistically the result was only going one way, but Saints still had to complete the job, the aim being to get back to Clarence Park as quickly as possible: Curran's quiz night awaited us.

Old Cholms, perhaps seeking to accrue as many batting bonus points as possible as they fight a relegation battle, never made an effort to reach the target.

Smith and Broxton both claimed a wicket in the early exchanges, with the former’s breakthrough ably assisted by Church who took a diving catch in cover.

Islam and Speller both kept the runs in check, with Speller nabbing a wicket thanks to a quick thinking stumping from Wilton. Saints worked hard in the field, with Church taking a second good grab off Winfield. Caley is still seeking fantasy league points for field position settings which lead to wickets, and on this day would have been credited with at least two such victims.

Having got through the top order, it was time to polish things off and get back to St Albans. Walker fell just short of a hattrick - three wickets in four balls - for 3/17 (sheer burglary according to some of the other bowlers), and Winfield (Jr) picked up three himself (3/13) to wrap up a very comfortable victory in the 35th over.

Old Cholms may have offered an undermanned opponent, but you still have to put them away, and the Threes were good enough to do that with ease.

St Albans player of the match: Zach West.
