Chipperfield Clarendon II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 20 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 13 runs

Match report This week the Threes were on the road, visiting Chipperfield Clarendon, with important points in the St Albans CC fantasy league to play for.

With Threes players jostling to top that league, rather than Division 8A of the Herts League, there were a number of interesting fantasy selections. Attempts to coerce the skipper’s batting and bowling strategies were numerous.

Anyway, to the cricket. Saints won the toss, and chose to bat first on a greenish wicket, with an outfield that appeared to have benefited from the week’s wet weather.

For their part, Chipperfield Clarendon IIs were keen to shore up their position in the league table, sitting just above the relegation positions.

Opener West - backing his chances by captaining his own 2nd placed fantasy team - was visibly disappointed to be out for just one. Law entered and immediately found a way through the field, while Murray at the other end got the short balls away to the boundary. After two super shots through the offside, Law edged behind, and first slip completed an excellent catch; Saints 36/2.

Murray followed for 20, which proved to be the team’s top score of the day. Before the score had moved on, both O’Toole and Murphy were out for ducks. O’Toole’s blob meant that his fantasy leading Crusty Curmudgeons were -15, taking West In The League closer to the lead. Saints were now 45/5, in the space of 9 overs, with hasty attempts at preparing to bat seen everywhere.

There was brief respite as Lawrence and Caley added 21, the former hoping for more than the 8 fantasy points his innings yielded, as he had some ground to make up on the leaders. Unfortunately the tail didn’t wag significantly as Saints innings was wrapped up with the tally short of a hundred.

Tea was taken quickly, with an early finish inevitable. Could Saints work some magic against a team that had collapsed once or twice this season, and which was now a man down, their keeper having headed to A&E to assess damage to a dislocated finger late in the innings.

Late call up Broxton, scheduled to be at Lord’s on this day, a situation thwarted by England’s three day capitulation, was given the new ball and got things under way with a maiden. Rosson, hit for four first ball, then swung one through the gate to get Saints on the board. With wickets following in his second and third overs, the game was alive. Special mention must be made of Murray’s catch, running down the hill and snatching the flyer from the air, an outstanding grab to bring Rosson’s third.

Broxton’s super spell went wicketless, with Winfield tried next - he added his customary no balls to proceedings. From 20/3, the score ticked along as a sequence of bowlers was tried in short spells, with opener Moore and skipper Yogaretnam resisting well.

With due consideration to the match situation, the skipper chose to bring on O’Toole, offering him a chance to make fantasy point amends for his earlier duck. It took until his fifth over, but then he had two in quick succession, the first ending a partnership of 51. A third wicket - 15 points more - meant that O’Toole finished with the fine figures of 3/14. Rosson was brought back from the bottom end and now saw off persistent opener Moore for 32, well caught by Broxton, a knock that had threatened to take his side home.

Now the Chipperfield boys were 81/7, just 17 from victory, but still with their usual opener still absent on his dislocated finger errand. Rosson duly completed his five-for, and Walker wrapped up victory, courtesy another fine catch, this time to O’Toole.

Somehow Saints had defended their meagre total of 97, with many thanks to O’Toole and Rosson, whose 5/30 was a deserved match winner.

Of course, in other matters, the fantasy league situation had shifted in favour of the Crusty Curmudgeons. None of the key players there had selected Rosson, an opportunity gone begging.

So another ugly win for the Threes, a hattrick of spirited victories in spite of some underwhelming performances. When the performances are what they should be, this team will do well.
