St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Offley & Stopsley on Sat 27 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 75 runs

Match report For their last home fixture of the league season, St Albans Threes hosted Offley & Stopsley, and completed their fourth consecutive victory.

With bank holiday absences, the visitors - a single team club - arrived with just nine men, less than ideal for a team sitting bottom of the league table. Unsympathetically, St Albans won the toss and chose to bat first.

The loss of an early wicket brought Murray and Law together, with the bowlers not giving much away on a slow wicket. Slowly the partnership grew, as the batters took advantage of the two absent fielders, and some more ragged bowling. Law was typically powerful in his shots down the ground, while Murray was generally content to turn the strike over, perhaps recognising that he wasn’t quite his normal, fluent self.

Having reached 44, Murray was dismissed, having played his part in an excellent partnership of 150. Shortly after Law reached his ton, his second of the season for the threes, another reminder of his tremendous value.

Once Law went, Lawrence took over as the overs ticked down, collecting 39 runs in good time, and adding 34 with O’Toole. The pair were doubtless both happy to finish not out: 15 more fantasy points collected.

Saints had finished on 221. Fair credit to the visitors, who never gave in with bowling or fielding, staying united as a team, when it would have been all too easy to fall apart.

As it happened, Offley & Stopsley then made a bright start with the bat, with Saints’ openers not quite hitting the mark. Church nabbed the first wicket, and Button then got his bowling into good order - this was probably his best spell of the year, yet went unrewarded.

Introduced early at the top end, Walker (eight overs, 2/12) found a semblance of line and length, and with the occasional misbehaving delivery diminishing the batters’ confidence, was able to keep things tight. While they lost a pair of wickets shortly before the drinks break, the visitors were ahead of Saints’ halfway run tally.

Murphy had bowled tightly early, though conceded more than he would have liked in his closing overs, even as he grabbed a consolation wicket. In truth, the middle overs slow down meant that O&S were now in search of batting bonus points rather than victory, and they continued to go about their business in a way that threatened to deny Saints the early finish that they craved. Bowling duties were handed over to Glazier and O’Toole.

In the end, Glazier (2/22) and O’Toole (2/10) would both have been pleased with their results as Saints ran out comfortable winners in the 38th over. A note on efforts in the field today, too: the team barely put a foot wrong with ground fielding and catching, which cannot often be said.

Another positive result for the threes, with the team’s attention quickly turning to the following weekend’s visit to Pinner, their final fixture of the season.
