Hemel Hempstead Town V v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 06 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 33 Runs
Match report
On a hard looking surface, 5XI won the toss and chose to field because “chasing is more fun”. Riley Curtis opened the bowling with his father Iain offering plenty of advice from mid-off. The younger Curtis started with two very tight maidens, swinging the bowl across and away from the batsmen, but couldn’t make the breakthrough. Frank O’Leary opened from the other end, and the wicket finally came at the end of the 8th over, as O’Leary bowled their first opener to leave Hemel 33-1.
Finlay Killner came on and immediately bowled the other opener and generally ran in hard, keeping the pace high. In contrast, Fin McNab bowled with his usual slow but challenging leg spin from the other end. The Fin twins combined well, with Killner taking another 2 wickets and McNab taking one,
with Hemel 75-5 after 16 overs. Curtis Senior replaced McNab to continue the spin seam combo, with his slow left arm unlucky not to take a wicket. Sud was the pace option and bowled a very tidy 4 overs for just 7 runs as Saints turned the screw.
The final spin seam combo was Alexis Awonuga and Zac Tarrant. Tarrant opened up with a wicket maiden, and in total bowled an excellent 6 over spell ending with 2-17, and Awonuga took a well-deserved wicket to end with 1-16 off 4 overs. Killner, Riley Curtis and McNab came back, but it was clear that the Hemel team had saved some of their more experienced batters for lower in the order and only one further wicket was taken, off Riley, so 5XI couldn’t quite finish off the Hemel side, who ended on 188-9.
On the face of it, this seemed below par with a rapid outfield and a very short downhill boundary on one side. However, there were clearly a few demons in the pitch, with a couple of balls that had kept low or jumped up, and so it proved. Although Matthew Shadwick opened solidly, unfortunately at the
other end wickets fell at a consistent pace with some poor shot selection given the known difficulties with the surface, and none of Shadwick’s first 4 partners got out of single figures. Saints were 50-4 in no time. Shadwick himself was given run out, before the umpires realised the keeper had already knocked the bails off with his pads, but even that reprieve wasn’t to last long, with Shadwick eventually out for 17.
Hugo Thomas played fluently and scored quickly to give some hope to the side, and was partnered for a while by O’Leary who scored 14, but wickets
continued to fall and Thomas was eventually out for 35 caught when needing to accelerate the scoring rate. Out came the final pair of McNab and Iain Curtis, who was only batting “if absolutely needed” due to injury. Although both played very solidly, in truth the required rate was too high by this stage, and eventually the final wicket fell with Saints still 43 runs short and only a couple of overs to go. Iain was left not out on 20.
