Tewin III v St Albans Cricket Club 6XI on Sat 06 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 6 wickets
Match report
Result – Won by 6 wickets
Player of the match – Peter Barham, 51* and 3 catches
On a warm Saturday, our newfound 6XI found themselves at Tewin CC with a squad of youngsters featuring a handful of senior players and stand-ins due to drop outs and short numbers. The skipper realised just before the toss that we didn’t have a designated keeper in the team and quite a few bowlers, in comes Peter Barham, a last minute replacement for his son and kindly put his hand up for keeping the wickets with borrowed gear from the opposition.
Skipper Vikas Narula elected to bowl first, opening with the combined might of Thomas Bentley and Sri Yendapally. Bentley found instant reward, taking two sharp wickets within his first over, while promising young player Sri slaved away at the other end, conserving the run rate and being very unfortunate not to take a wicket of his own.
After this initial opening spell, the reigns were taken by young gun Thomas Coulling and dab hand Ciarán Walsh, making his Saturday debut for the season. Coulling kept things tight, conceding few runs and keeping the batsmen on their toes, restricting the reckless running attempted in previous overs. Walsh, despite his own best efforts, bowled efficiently, bowling a good economy and taking an LBW. It’s worth noting that while appealing for said LBW, Walsh decided to scream “HE’S GOT TO GO!!!” at the umpire; an extremely village approach that somehow yielded a wicket.
After this spell, newcomers Shafrik and Qasim took over. Qasim put in an overall fantastic effort; with some undeniably “interesting” deliveries, he bowled some sensational balls and established himself well with his St Albans debut. Shafrik was more successful and consistent from his end, bowling divine line and length, leaving the batsmen baffled and unable to score very many from his approach.
Hassan and Altaf then made themselves known to the opposition with the ball, Altaf bowling his usual delightful line and length with wheels befitting a Toyota factory. Hassan, at the other end, did his job well, restricting the run rate despite some loose balls. This made way for youngster Will Barham to close out the bowling attack with some sharp balls. The lad was unfortunate to have several (admittedly difficult) drops, and walked away with a very respectable average for a player his age VS men who have played for decades longer than Will has even been alive.
After tea, the mighty Saints began their time with the bat. Openers Altaf and Pete Barham (who stepped in for his son Rhys today) made their mark with something nearing contempt. Both men reached their respective 50s in short time; they were evidently in some kind of a rush. Sri and son of the opener Will put themselves on the opposition’s radar with respective scores of 4 and 3, Will being unfortunate to be run out by a bum run call from teammate Qasim, who to this day maintains “if he had backed the run he would have made it.” Qasim, we love you dearly, but the ball went maybe four feet and the player you asked to run at 100mph was 12; possibly a note for next time?
Qasim, despite stitching up his partner, went on to score a crucial 12, with partner Shafrik making a vital cameo for 2. With five runs to win off roughly 12 overs, local big man Thomas Coulling strode onto the pitch with a swagger known only to players of his hitherto unknown calibre. With Walsh having told him, “How old are you, mate? 18? Ok sound, if you cream a six to win here I’ll buy you a jug back at the club”, Coulling did his utmost to smack said six into another postcode. He just fell short, going for four, allowing partner Vikas to get the winning runs.
A rousing victory for the 6XI, marking their first win this season for the club! We can only expect the same again next week.
