Match report The 3XI were back at the home of cricket, SLCG, for the latest chapter in their rise up the Division 8A table. Visiting side Hemel had not continued with the form this year that saw them gain promotion from 9A last season, with them winless going into this fixture. Despite a much changed side seeing the re-emergence of Hicksy following his cricketing hiatus, aswell as young Speller playing his first 3s game of the season, there was clearly a good feeling amongst the 3s given recent results and the oppositions record. But, the importance of not getting complacent was stressed in the warm up huddle, as the Hemel brigade did their own warm up huddle on the square, likely comprising a mixture of adult pleasantries and school playground gossip, as Hemel boasted a gang of 5 very young looking junior cricketing scallywags. Despite numerous questions to the effect, Jamie Speller didn’t know them from school, and to the rest of his teams shock he was actually in 6th form!

Once West got over the shock of this news, he found his form again with the coin and chose to bat first, with himself and Manny to open up.
Early going was tough, as West dealt with an uncomfortable inquiry from their left armer who was unlucky not to dismiss him in the 2nd over of the day - a regulation slip catch going down.
His right arm opening partner would soon have him though, pinned LBW, and Streety set about the rebuild with Manny as the bowlers kept their discipline well, not giving anything away in the early stages.
For a time, the overs and runs tally would never stray too far from each other. The Hemel openers and first changers, especially one of their young seamers had delivered many a seed, West having a front row seat to numerous remarkable deliveries when standing at umpire leading him to enquire how many the junior bowler was allowed to bowl in one spell.

Manny soon fell, having worked hard for his 13 alongside Street who was being equally as watchful, and despite a 21 run over on the brink of drinks which effectively doubled our total we were behind our desired rate, but took comfort in the fact we had wickets in hand and a decent set of batters to come who could apply some impetus.
Moksy, Lawrence and Hicks came and went after adding some relatively quick runs but not pressing on, all the while Street was anchoring the innings and was starting to find more boundaries as the bowling dropped from its high standard of the opening stages.
Sandeep, in at 7, with around 8 overs to go added some much needed firepower and after Street brought up his hard grafted 50 and departed stumped, Murphy joined new man Singh.
Adam was clearly meaning business, foreshadowed by his arrival to the ground earlier in his city-boy work attire.
Him and Sandeep batted excellently together, putting on 40 in quick time, propelling us to a total of 188. Scarcely believable given the situation 15 overs in.

Sandeep and Winfield were tasked with replicating Hemel’s level with the ball, and following some intel provided on one of their openers from Co-Chairman Saunders, the field was set accordingly and Sandeep obliged to coax a drive, looping up to Action Man Hicks at point. Sandeep was perhaps unlucky not to claim any more scalps, but Winfield at the other end had two bowled and Hemel were reeling at 11-3 off the first 10. Just the start Saints were after.

Sandeep made way for the skipper to have a trundle, which was a mixed bag of testing deliveries peppering the pads of the Hemel opener, and short rubbish. Experiment over, and Murph was soon on to partner the young Speller after drinks, who had started brightly at the other end taking 2 in his first 2 overs.
41-5 was the score after 20, and the Saints contingent buzzed through the next 10 overs in what can’t have been longer than 20 minutes. Murph and Speller combining well to only leak 15 runs in this period, and which also saw Speller taking his maiden 5 wicket haul for the club. A great moment, and one which was celebrated by a few members of the team a touch more, as they had placed Speller into their fantasy team for the weekend.

Hicks replaced Speller and took a wicket soon after, once he had remembered to pitch a delivery on the strip, with it looping up to West at mid on for an easy catch.
Murph remained wicketless and Lawrence palming down a stumping opportunity with his last ball was hard for him to stomach, but all was over soon after as Moksy only needed 2 balls to end proceedings and lock up a 124 run win.

A really good showing with the bat from Street to anchor the innings, and Sandeep and Murph at the end - backed up by everyone in the field, most notably of course Speller for his 5 wickets. This was another good win for the 3s and the 100% record continues which sees them rise to 2nd in the 8A table.
On to Berkhamsted next week, where the 30 point trend will hopefully continue.
