St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Redbourn III on Sat 29 Jul 2023 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 26 runs
Match report
The threes rocked up to a soggy SLCG. Due to the absence of skipper Westy no warm-up was conducted and Winners sent his Sunday skipper in for tossing duties. With Lawrence winning the toss and we were batting on a damp track with Under 12 stump holes on it…
The 3s opened up with Stu and the inform Wilton. However, this partnership did not last long as Stu middled a leg side full toss straight to the oblivious square leg. Moksy then greeted Wilton at the crease and blocked out the rest of the first over. However, in true Moksy fashion his innings was thoroughly entertaining if not brief, and fell to a top edge caught by the keeper for 4. The recently promoted Church arrived with the score 7-2 in the 3rd over. Church and Wilton stuck around (longer than the first two) until Church was bowled just as the skipper Westy arrived. Lawrence’s form with the coin unfortunately didn’t carry over with the bat as he fell for 7. Hicksy was bowled after yorking himself, despite trying to blame the treacherous pitch. The 3s were in need of a rebuild.
Cometh the hour cometh the Murph. Wilton and Murphy batted exceptionally in the situation with Murph's straight six easily winning shot of the day. This was a crucial partnership given the situation and was unfortunately caught going for one shot too many, he departed for a very crucial 31 with beautiful shots a plenty. Despite this Wilton was still nurdling the ball around SLCG and eventually brought up his half-century in the 25th over(albeit with very few boundaries) this was a vital innings as he battled through jet lag and an interesting pitch. Ralfe, fresh from Turkey was demoted to 8 due to illness and survived a first ball lbw scare in which the Redbourn skipper instructed the umpire to ‘learn the rules of cricket’. Despite this, Nick and Wilton put on a valuable partnership with Ralfe showing no mercy to the young off-spinner by hitting him for three huge leg-side sixes. He then fell stumped for 36 in very quick time. Tom also fell shortly after Ralfe, also stumped for an exceptionally made 55 given the circumstances. This left the experience tail to guide us to a commendable 201 which was definitely an above par score given the state of the pitch and outfield.
Winners opened up with confidence, regularly beating the bat and bowling a very tight spell. At the other end it wasn’t quite the same. The less said about Church’s short spell the better. Winners claimed his first scalp as he floated one through the defences of the young Redbourn opener. Alexis replaced Church and bowled will immaculate control and variation, soaking up the runs and causing indecision amongst the batsmen because a non existent single was called when hit straight to Moksy. Alexis claimed a wicket of his own as well with a beauty that bowled their number 4. Tooley replaced winners at the top end and bowled with control after some first over looseners and claimed a wicket, edged straight to the ‘gully maestro’ Stu Murray. Tooley even claimed another when one was feathered through to Lawrence. At the other end Murph replaced Alexis after his exceptional spell. The quality didn’t drop off, with Murph bowling well and claimed two tailenders. Moksy also bowled 3 good overs at the death claiming the Redbourn number 7. Ralfey, feeling slightly better also came on to bowl and claimed the important wicket of the opener who made 85. With the game pretty much wrapped up Stu was handed the ball with 34 left to win win the number 9 and 11 on strike. Despite some big swinging from the Redbourn tail only 10 runs came from the over. And the threes walked to a 33 run victory.
This leaves the 3s as the only unbeaten team in the club with now 5 games to go. 2 wins now for promotion…
