Finals Day v St Albans Cricket Club Girls U15B on Sun 16 Jul 2023 at 10:30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 47 runs
Match report
Another successful season for the U15 girls meant they had qualified for the county finals being played at Berkhamsted. St Albans were drawn to play Bishop’s Stortford in one semi-final, whilst Harpenden were given a bye in theirs.
With rain threatening captain Kara won the toss and put Stortford into bat.
The format of these matches allows the first four balls of the batter’s innings as free hits, so players are keen to make the most of these early deliveries.
Bailey and Tilly opened the bowling with great pace, but the batters were able to find some gaps and used the sloping ground to ensure boundaries were picked up regularly. Stortford’s opener Poppy retiring on 31* with a well struck 6.
The first bowling changes to Lucy and Kara, brought their reward as Lucy struck with her first ball - a great catch by Jessie behind the stumps. St Albans pegged the run rate back for a few overs. Alicia picked up a wicket with her second delivery, clean bowling Beth for 11. Rachel was very economical (3-13-1) and bowled Katherine, who had hit 3 maximums. Unfortunately a number of catching chances through the innings did not stick, and extras contributed to Stortford finishing on 160-3.
A good score in this format, but St Albans have scored more than this in other matches this season, and if they could make good use of the short boundaries and sloping ground they had a chance.
Alicia (10) and Evie (11) opened the batting and scored well from their initial free hits, using the pace of the bowling well, and running well between the wickets. Both girls were eventually bowled making way for Jessie (4) and Kara (4). Some tight bowling restricting their partnership. New batters Tilly and Lucy started slowly, but soon got into their stride hitting boundaries regularly. Lucy (11) was very unlucky to be caught to the catch of the season by the Stortford captain! Bailey (18) continued to build the partnership with Tilly and the girls finished on 113 for 7. Tilly finishing not out on 27.
St Albans had hit more runs with the bat than Stortford, but the opposition only conceded 2 no balls and 2 wides in the whole innings.
St Albans should be really proud of all their performances this season, every one of the 19 players in the squad has contributed.
Stortford’s winning sequence continued through to the final where they beat Harpenden by an even bigger margin. Stortford are setting the standards in both Herts and Essex leagues, where they remain unbeaten for the last 3 years.
Players of the match: Tilly 27*, and Alicia 2-6-1
