Eastcote CC v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 09 Jun 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report This week, the Sunday 1's found themselves playing in Eastcote despite it originally being a home fixture, due to the opposition having a young side and travel arrangements proving difficult.
After a terrible journey, the vast majority of the squad arrived only 10 minutes before the scheduled start time. Lawrence's poor luck with the coin continued, and the Saints were bowling. Losing the toss wasn't so bad, as the umpire kept reminding us throughout the day that Eastcote had the best teas on the circuit!
Banks and Curran bowled well early on, with Curran unlucky not to make a breakthrough when the Eastcote opener perfectly dissected the large gap between Winners and Murph at first and second slip. Fortunately for JC, Murray in the gully made no mistake a few balls later, taking a smart catch. The Eastcote openers began to look comfortable, so the skipper tossed the ball to the side’s premier spinner, Murph, with the score at 90-1 after 15 overs. Josh was introduced shortly after, fresh off going at 13's on Saturday, soon found his rhythm. The spin duo struck shortly after one another, with Murph trapping the opener on 49 in front of middle and Lawrence snaring a fine snick, completely unaware the opposition had hit it.

This brought their captain to the crease, whom Murph persistently reminded that it wasn’t just about him as he continued to run out several team mates, including the one he didn’t tell the fixture change and sent to CP. Josh and Mistry combined twice to remove two of the Eastcote middle order, leaving their captain batting with the tail and the score at 179-7 after 35 overs. Unfortunately, he took a liking to Winners. Hitting him for several boundaries, Winners' excuse was that he wasn’t still drunk after an uncharacteristically early exit from the bunker the previous evening. Lawrence returned to his openers at the death to finish the job. Banks bowled with great control and removed their number 10. This left JC to bowl the last over with their set skipper on 87* at the non-strikers end. Determined to keep him at this end after being hit for 16 the over before, JC decided to Mankad their captain on the first ball of the over, and Eastcote finished on 248.

The Saints then tucked into a great spread during the break, well worthy of the hospitality awards they had received in previous seasons. Stu and Rory opened proceedings, both utilizing the edges of their bats well before being removed fairly early on. Harvey and Josh didn’t last much longer, and the Saints were staring down the barrel of a write-off with Sims in the driving seat. Lawrence hung around briefly before being triggered. This left the Saints at 90-5, still needing 158 more runs.

Sims, uncharacteristically in total control of his drives, started to accumulate runs nicely. Unfortunately, he was rapidly running out of partners, with Mistry and Murph both falling shortly after he brought up his 50. This brought Winners to the crease, who provided some assistance to the Sunday gun. Sims, crashing the ball into the fence, showed no signs of slowing down, only being troubled by the bumper. Winners then fell to their young leg spinner, spooning a half-tracker into the hands of square leg. This meant Sims had to pull the handbrake on his innings, with the Saints still needing 64 runs to win with only two wickets left. Banks dug in for a while before dispatching the Eastcote spinners for a few quick boundaries, making a miracle chase look more and more likely with the required runs steadily reducing. Sims brought up a magnificent ton with a single into the offside, but the game was not done yet, with the Saints still needing 30 runs with 5 overs to go. Banks and Sims ran excellently, punishing the bad balls. This left us needing 12 off the last over with Sims on strike. He eased all nerves very quickly, finishing the job with 3 balls to spare.

A real clutch innings from George, steering the Sunday 1's to a second victory in as many weeks and to the top of the table.
