St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Harrow CC on Sun 02 Jun 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
After last weeks washout, this week saw the return of the prestigious chess valley league to CP for the 2024 season. A side assembled of familiar Sunday rascals along with a sprinkle of chess valley royalty to face Harrow CC.
As the saints arrived at CP, some still in the same clothes as the previous night, a few sore heads were quite confused to see a harrow side many of them in full whites on their hands and knees examining the wicket before embarking on an unconventional football style warm up, jogging round the square.
In rather contrary conditions to what we saw the previous day, the sun was bearing down on a very busy park and sun cream was very much required for many of the saints side. This made the toss all the more important and unfortunately Skipper Lawrence started the season with some devastating news to the rest of the squad, we were bowling.
Badsy and Curran were tasked with opening the bowling, Badsy utilizing chess valley rules expertly sending 4 out of his 5 ball over down the leg side. Curran opened tidily but it was badsy who made the breakthrough knicking the opener off to bayliss at second slip much to everyone’s amusement. This sparked a rapid collapse from Harrow thanks to some poor shots on a wicket that was very tricky in the first 10 overs leaving them 28-7, wickets shared around. The highlights being a badsy half tracker which stopped in the wicket and clipped off stump, a wicket so bad the saints were stunned into silence not really believing what they had just seen. Alexis bowling one into the very bare area outside off stump that went onto roll into the base of off stump and JT taking a wicket on his return with a rank long hop outside off stump which was well held by Joshy. A mixture of declaration bowling, some poor intent from the Harrow lower order and the pitch getting slightly better meant Harrow limped to 99 when eventually being bowled out in the 35th over, extras top scoring with 31.
West was quick to remind everyone at the interval of pizza gate, a similar scenario under his tenure where a stacked SACC batting line up failed to chase 112. Alexis and West were tasked with opening up, unfortunately the former only lasting two balls before Lawrence adjudged him LBW much to his disgust as he claimed to have hit it. This brought out of form simsy to the crease fresh off the back of two ducks, interestingly he opted for yellow pads instead of his normal white pair. Third ball sims was served a juicy full toss which he decided to miscue high into the hands of cover who took a great grab in fairness over his shoulder. Another duck, probably karma for wearing yellow pads. The scorecard now read 1-2, Stu was next in and struggled to get their spinner away before getting a good ball that turned through the gate. A few nerves started to creep into the saints camp. West and Mulvaney soon put all nerves to bed, putting on a show for the spectators gathered around the park. A combination of some glorious gubbing and genuine good batting, including a trademark west cover drive and a huge 6 into the tennis courts from Josh meant the saints easily chased the total in 19 overs. West finishing on 52* and Josh 41*. In true Sunday fashion the winning runs a switch hit from josh through cover for 4, after west had tried and failed numerous times.
A solid performance from the Sunday 1’s which meant they could open the bar early and enjoy the evening sunshine.
