Wheathampstead 4XI v St Albans Cricket Club 5XI on Sat 27 Jul 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 18 runs
Match report
After a tie last week the 5s travelled to the picturesque Aldwickbury School. On a dry looking wicket skipper Melling elected to bowl first. Finlay Kilner returning to the side opened up for St Albans and soon
After a couple of early boundaries and close Lbw shouts Fin the breakthrough trapping the batter in front. With the othe opener looking dangerous he followed soon after. Slightly more fortuitous this time, gloving the ball, onto the body, onto the floor and onto the stumps, it's a wicket in the scorebook though. With Prath Khatavkar bowling at the other end they were soon able to bring the run rate down after some early boundaries.
Tom Hadden and Jude Berry continued the Saints charge with Hadden getting one to keep low to knock back the stumps. With the Wheathampstead number 3 looking solid and hard to remove Saints kept chipping away at the other end. A diving catch at short midwicket brought the fourth and second for Hadden. Berry at the other end was finding his line and responded perfectly to being hit for 6 by bowling a dangerous looking batter next ball.
With Hadden restricting runs at the other end Suli Nisar came on to bowl om his 5s debut, a left arm wrist spinner, something rarely seen in Div 11. It didn't take long for Suli to make his mark, a good catch at deep midwicket gave St Albans 5.
Runs were still coming for Wheathampstead on a small and lighting outfield so the sight of Sud Suryavanshi in the 30 over would bring fear to any batter in the league and soon picked two wickets wickets with his explosive pace, two quick for the Wheathampstead lower order. A pitched up ball that exploded off a length forced the objurate Wheathampstead number 3 to briefly retire hurt. Jamie Coffer finished the innings with 2 well deserved wickets at the death leaving St Albans chasing 154 for victory.
Hugo Thomas and Matt Shadwick open the St Albans innings looking to chase down a gettable total. After Shadwick departed early Vijender joined Thomas at the crease. Thomas soon found his range with a number of glorious trademark shots through mid on. Vijdener soon found his range to lay a solid platform. Once Thomas departed for a well made 31 skipper Andy Melling came in and scored 3 early boundaries. With the rate looking good Vijender departed to a superb running catch at square leg. On the break of drinks a brainless shot from Melling saw the 3rd wicket fall. Further wickets left Saints in trouble with Nisar unlucky to get one that didn't get off the floor. After being too quick with the ball Sud came out and 6 and soon proved too strong with the bat. A rapid 30 gave and St Albans hope with some trademark lusty blows including a massive 6 over square leg. However a good caught and bowled saw the end of him. Jude Berry tried to carry on where Sud left off and found further boundaries as the Saints edged closer to the target before departing. PK and Fin Kilner set about knocking off the last 40 runs and all looked possible until PK unluckily saw one creep under his bat. With Hadden the last to fall, St Albans suffered an agonising 18 run loss
