St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Saints CC on Sun 19 May 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report On a glorious sunny afternoon, the Sunday 2s played a 35 over friendly against a nomadic side captained by regular 5s player Tom Hadden, and also boasting a guest bowler in Ciaran Walsh. Meanwhile the Sunday 2s did just about manage to put 11 players out, with the help of two Dad and son combinations (Banks and Nair). Winning the toss, St Albans decided to bat first.

Manny opened the batting with his usual confidence, and while wickets fell at the other end with relatively regularity, he steered St Albans to 62-3 at drinks. One of the wickets unfortunately falling to Ciaran Walsh, whose inane commentary and questions were constantly ringing in the ears of the batters. After drinks St Albans accelerated, with contributions from Tom Cocks, Tom Banks and Altaf Hussein, the latter deciding to promote himself up the order by just ignoring when he was actually supposed to go out. Manny ended the innings unbeaten on 67, with St Albans reaching 167.

Tom Banks opened the bowling with Prath Khatavkar. Both bowled well, with Banks particularly receiving the admiration of the opposition batters, but it was Khatavkar who took the wicket, caught behind. Sam Davey and Altaf came on to bowl and unfortunately then began the reason St Albans ultimately lost the match, with 6 or 7 dropped catches across the next 15 overs. Even an over of mystery spin from Jez Banks in his first ever game of cricket wasn't enough to take a wicket (although he did shell a very easy c&b), and the opposition were coasting by the time the second wicket did ultimately fall to the tidy off spin of Praveen Kumar - although the catch from Jez was worth the wait: a fumble, grabbed on the second attempt and then falling on the ground while attempting to throw the ball in the air in celebration, ending up mobbed by his team mates. Kumar took another wicket, a sharp caught and bowled, and Tom Banks bowled another, but the opposition had enough quality batters in reserve to see them over the line. with 6 overs to spare.
