Stevenage 6XI v St Albans Cricket Club 6XI on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 129 runs

Match report St Albans 6XI won by 129 runs.

The 10 players of the 6XI travelled to Graveley village to play Stevenage 6XI on Saturday. Google maps had pinpointed the pitch, but the only way to the ground required a long walk up hill through a field of sheep. The view worth the effort and on a hot day the skipper was pleased to call correctly and bat first.

Openers Xander Molvik and Jamie Coffer negotiated the variable bounce well, until Xander received a ball that hit him painfully on the knee and he retired hurt. Praveen Kumar joined Jamie and the two players cautiously waited to put away any bad ball. A good platform at 76-0 after 15 overs. Praveen (33) then ran past one to be stumped. Suli Nisar left his scoring duties as next batter, but sadly he returned to his scoring duties after just one ball.
Jamie fell to a great catch just at drinks for a very good 41, and the team at 93-3. The platform set and time for Nathan Roos and Jude Berry to up the rate. Nathan’s cameo of 40 included two huge sixes, several frightened sheep, but just one lost ball. Jude’s confidence was back and in the runs too and finished on 22. Ben Hingston joined Jude and it didn’t take him long to get his eye in – 12 fours in his punishing 53, eventually bowled by their young leg spinner.
Still 5 overs left and enough time for the remaining players, including a recovered Xander, to swing their bats and set a huge 276.

Keen to have a better day with the ball in hand Suli Nisar opened the bowling and used the slope to his advantage, preventing Stevenage from getting any sort of start, and finished on 7-2-23-2. Nathan at the other end was too quick for the Stevenage openers, taking out the off stump in his first over, and given the inconsistent nature of the pitch, Nathan kindly retired himself after his second over. Far too good at this level, and several levels above too. Any relief for Stevenage was short lived however as Jude, in replacing Nathan, bowled a double wicket maiden in his first over! Stevenage reduced to 18-3 after 6 overs.

Although the game was done for Stevenage their batters changed their approach and looked to build partnerships. All St Albans bowlers maintained the pressure with ball, giving away very few easy runs, and standards were very high in the field too, with a couple of outstanding catches from the youngsters. Some of the bowling highlights were Jude (7-2-24-2), Praveen (4-30-2), and James Purvis, (4-10-0), who was playing his first ever senior game, and unlucky not to take a couple of wickets. Stevenage batted through to the 36th over before Jamie Coffer cleaned up their skipper with his third ball. St Albans won by 129 runs, and the team retired to the shed just in time to watch the final few overs of the T20 final and commiserate with Nathan.
A great all round team performance.
