St Albans Cricket Club 6XI v Boxmoor 4XI on Sat 13 Jul 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By 4 Wickets

Match report A youthful St Albans 6XI side, which included several players playing in their first men's match, arrived at Sandpit Lane to face a Boxmoor side that boasted a mix of youth and experience - including a venerable 82 year old!

Skipper Webber negotiated to bowl first and set Coffer and Chakma-Smith (0-27) about their task. Both bowled nicely but chances were few and far between and those that did come fell agonisingly out of reach of the fielders. Saints stuck to their task and Coffer was eventually rewarded, clean bowling Boxmoor's no.1 to capture the first wicket. Boxmoor's other opener meanwhile was scoring more freely, rattling off a succession of boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking along at more than 6 an over. He soon reached his half century and graciously retired to give others an opportunity. This, combined with the introduction of Kumar (0-19) and Harris (0-21) to the bowling attack, proved to be something of a turning point in the innings, with runs becoming much harder to come by, helped by some very conservative batting. While no further wickets fell, the run rate was back under control and had fallen below 5 by the time drinks arrived. After the break, play resumed and Johnson and Green (1-36) were handed the ball. They kept Boxmoor's batsmen under control, Johnson bowling 15 dots in a row at the start of his spell, and more crucially both picked up wickets to get Saints back in the hunt. Boxmoor picked up the pace again late on, but wickets fell to Johnson, Nisar Jr (1-13) and the returning Coffer (2-46) to check their progress, with their innings ending on 197-7 - a somewhat daunting but not impossible target.

Webber and Nisar opened the batting for Saints and, after a quiet few overs, started to find the gaps in the field, targeting Boxmoor's less mobile fielders. Webber departed in the 6th over for a brisk 18, feathering one behind, with Witty (3) following shortly afterwards, also adjudged to have been caught behind much to his protestation. This brought Hingston to the crease and he and Nisar set about accelerating the run rate, the former dealing mainly in boundaries while the latter accumulated steadily with well placed 1s and 2s. Boxmoor's bowlers had no answers and by the drinks break Saints were well ahead of the game at 123-2. Hingston, who continued to bat aggressively and score quickly, reached his half century shortly after drinks - his second in successive matches - and duly retired. The run rate slowed and wickets tumbled as Nisar (27), Green (1), O'Gorman (1) and Chakma-Smith (4) departed in quick succession, Saints slumping to 137-5. Was the game up? Fortunately not, as some clean hitting by Harris (41*) ably supported by Coffer (12*) saw Saints across the line with more than 4 overs to spare.

An excellent result to back up a fine all round performance. Man of the match goes to Ben Hingston for his 51* as well as some tidy glove work in the first innings, but an honourable mention must go to Zac Johnson for returning an impressive 3-32 from 8 overs on his senior debut.
