St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Hatch End CC 1st XI on Sat 10 May 2025 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
A winter re-jig of the Division 7 leagues saw us moved laterally from East to West, and with that there are a few unfamiliar opponents to contend with this season. Hatch End being one of these unknown quantities for our first game, a mid-table finisher in the division in 2024.
Ground set up gave West his first headache of the season, as PD opted to mark one side of the boundary nearer the Sandpit Lane road than the square. We all decided that none of us had a ran 4 in the locker this early in May, so after it was promptly remeasured, thoughts turned to the square itself which looked.. interesting. West wasn’t too surprised to be asked to bat first, and it would turn out the Hatch End bowling attack was aptly prepared for such conditions.
West was sent packing 9 balls into his season, prompting the spectating JL to remind him that the skipper had said himself barely a week ago that his bad knock was usually a 9 ball duck. Alfie Button, fresh through customs after his flight from Royston, soon joined West in the changing room. Not a good start to the year for both West, and the 3XI overseas player.
DWG was looking in good touch however, contributing the only real contender for AA shot of the day with a creamed off-drive. Alongside the resolute PD, a brief recovery was made to 44-2 but another two quick wickets soon changed that outlook. The Hatch End bowlers were bowling very well it has to be said, and were getting their just rewards.
The only source of resistance from the remainder of the batting line up came from late arrival, Murph. A well made 28 before missing a straight one got us up to a barely defendable 100, but we weren’t without hope in the interval given the assistance we knew the pitch would offer.
JC got us off to an ideal start – a 5 minute search for the meticulously chosen brand new conker in the Sandpit Lane bushes. After a few more looseners, he found his rhythm alongside the seasoned operator, JT. Wickets fell regularly, but the combination of good attacking intent from the Hatch End lineup and the odd loose ball meant that the scoreboard was always ticking closer and closer to the meagre target of 101 required.
By the time Tooley and West were introduced, the task was too great and despite the former managing to dismiss a left hander LBW coming over the wicket, the 3XI ran out of runs to work with.
A pair of dropped catches can be the only ‘what if’s in the field, but this game was lost with the bat, of that there is no doubt. On another day, a total of 120 may have been enough to take this one to the wire, but all thoughts now turn to next week where we face familiar foes Radlett and aim to get our season off the mark.
