St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 85 runs

Match report A typical Saturday morning for the 6XI team down to 7 players at 09:30 and on the brink of cancelling, but just after the start of play the 6s had a full 11. Made up of 6 men, 5 women, including two U13 colts, and 2 ex-county players (one with over 5,000 First Class runs), two father-daughter combos and one father-son – a first time for all of these family pairings.

After an agreed toss OA’s batted first on the astro at a very windy Sandpit Lane. Nadeem 3-15-0 and Amyas, 5-13-0 opened the attack, both using the wind to their advantage and kept the OA’s held up on 28 after the first 9 overs. Having been persuaded to play at 12:55, Tim joined the field in the 10th over and with his first touch of the ball - clean pick-up, turn and direct hit with a bullet throw their opener carried on running towards the changing rooms. Laura KJ (5-21-1) bowled accurately and removed the other opener – a sharp catch from Mark. Kara was bowling spin for the first time in a senior game and got into a good rhythm quickly, and was unlucky as numerous chances fell just out of reach. Freya also put in two great spells of bowling. Our bowlers found it hard to control the ball in the wind and OA’s started finding the boundary with regularity, despite the heroic efforts of Amyas patrolling the boundary. Tim was then brought on to continue his run of “firsts”. First ball bowled – wicket – a catch taken by Nadeem. First over - wicket maiden. Tim finishing with figures of 4-1-22-2. The 6s kept things tight in the field, some great stops by Molly, Mark and Amyas, but with a fast outfield and short boundaries OA’s had racked up 213 for 4 after their 35 overs.

Annie (15) and Kara (7) opened the innings for the 6s and despite the ball hooping around both played some wonderful drives through the covers. Jared joined the fray in the 7th over and rapidly increased the run rate to keep the chase alive finishing on 45. Nadeem (12) continued the push for runs but was well caught. The OA’s snaffling all the chances that came their way in the game. Tim’s first ball driven for 4 of course, but then picking up an injury finishing on 12. Freya and Amyas built a solid partnership and batted well together. It was left to AKJ to pick out their best fielder again leaving St Albans 85 runs short, all out for 128.

A game played in a great 6s spirit by both teams. Many thanks to the 4 non-members who stepped up at the last minute to ensure that 22 players had a game on Saturday. Tim and Jared showing us that class is permanent. A quote from one of the guests – “I’ve played cricket for 40 years and this has been the most positive game I’ve played”.
