Match report St Albans 5XI (74-9) lost to Mill Hill Village (159-10)
St Albans welcomed Mill Hill Village (2nd in the league) to a blustery Sandpit Lane Astro, and, having lost the toss they were given the opportunity to set a target. The St Albans bowling attack of James and Promise started brightly - Promise bowling their opener in his first over. However this brought the dangerous Asif to the crease who very quickly reached his 50 – and accelerated the total to 76-1 after 10 overs. The bowling change of Maroof and Vishwa brought the variation needed to reduce the run rate. For the first time in the innings the pressure told and Maroof’s deadly in-swinging yorker bowling their captain. Maroof finished with 8-22-1, and was unlucky to only pick up the single wicket. Adam picked up the key wicket of Asif – well caught by Peter at point. At drinks Mill Hill had reached 132-4, still well on target for a big total.
Their #5 took a liking to spin, so after a few overs the experienced pairing of Nadeem and Praveen were asked to conjure some magic. Supported by some great fielding and catches including a one-handed screamer by Nadeem off his own bowling, Nadeem and Praveen took the last 6 wickets for 12 runs. Mill Hill Village finishing all out for 178 in the 40th over. Praveen finishing on 5-16-1, and Nadeem 3.3-13-5. Some great support from everyone in the field, plenty of energy and bodies on the line. Momentum was with St Albans and the team were very positive that the target was well within reach.
Unfortunately the team second in the league knew their bowling strengths and were able to rip through the St Albans top order. At 7 for 4 after 8 overs the target looked a long way away. Mill Hill Village never let up – their opening bowlers bowling through, leaving the 5s at 31-5 from the first 16. The quality of bowling did not diminish but Tom Dalkins (20) and Maroof (16) dug in, and scrapped for every run, as the team searched for valuable batting points. With great support from Fin (11) and James (11*) a single batting point was eventually claimed. St Albans finishing on 93-9. Having worked so hard in the field earlier to get us back in the game, it was a chastening experience with the bat, against one of the best bowling attacks in the league.

Onwards and upwards next week where the 5s look to end the current run of results with a trip to Old Owens.
