Match report Daybreak. The 3s were pleased to be returning to the People’s Home of Cricket ™ after a chastening defeat at Watford
the previous week.

Once again in the Joe Root role, permanent stand-in skipper Telkman looked to the heavens and to
the BBC Weather app to seek help ahead of another crucial toss decision. Chief bowling strategist, Smith, offered early
words of encouragement via an early morning Whatsapp: “let’s hope you lose the toss so you don’t have to worry”.

After arriving at SLCG, the 3s players offered all manner of valuable, contradictory and cliched advice: “you always look up, not
down”, “you think about bowling first and then you bat first”, “whatever you do best, do first”. Finally, after looking at the
bowling prowess in the stables, JT duly won the toss for a third week in a row and elected to bowl first.

A non-cricket whites, actually pretty solid warm-up routine ensued with the white / light blue shirts running out 2-1 winners in the 5-aside,
World Cup tribute.

Magee and Smith opened up for Saints with Smith duly exerting his authority by going down the hill with the wind. Both
bowled with excellent control that allowed Saints, at one stage, to employ 3 slips and a gully to Smith (despite Murphy
spending a good 4 balls working out where gully was despite petitioning for 15 minutes straight for the field change) but
it was Magee that made the initial breakthroughs: LBW and caught in the ring.

After fine opening spells from both bowlers supported by highly energetic fielding, Saints turned to Mayet (0-26) and Telkman (1-21)
to continue the squeeze – which was largely successful on the occasions despite the earlier-agreed leg side wide rules depriving Telkman
of his chief dot-ball weapon.

But it was the introduction of Hicks that turned the tide of the innings. First over Hicks had the set batsman superbly caught at long on by Mayet
(promptly rewarded by being made to field long on to long on for the rest of the innings) followed by two more wickers supported by excellent catches
in the deep by Street and Murphy, narrowly avoiding a collision with an incoming, galloping horse who made his way onto the field. At 105-7, Hicks
continued to bowl with excellent control and was ably supported by the third of Saints’ spin triumvirate,

Murphy, who contributed with two wickets himself – one fantastically caught behind by Nair who capped off an excellent keeping
display on return to the side. But it was left to Hicks to round off the innings and complete his 5-for (his first for St
Albans; 5-22), getting the Bushey no. 10 out stumped after the batsman ran past one only to stop, turn around and
watch Nair gather the ball whip the bails off. The cheque is in the post. This capped off a fantastic display with the ball
and in the field from Saints: Bushey bowled out for 128.

An enjoyable tea break ensued with Bushey kind enough to share their plates of home made sandwiches, much to the
disdain of Murphy who had made the half time trip to M&S and already consumed 2 meal deals, 3 cookies and 20
cocktail sausages by the time the platters were offered around. Bushey further endeared themselves to the Saints faithful
when enquiring whether Joan was in fact Chaz’s daughter. You can come again, gents.

Unfortunately, this is where things started to unravel for the 3s. Stalwart openers Street and Sinharoy commenced
proceedings and things were looking good at 15-0. But Saints were aware that Bushey were perhaps the strongest
bowling side in the division and this started to manifest as a series of wickets fell. Sinharoy (4) and Nair (8) both fell
LBW and Street (12) followed shortly afterwards, bowled. Wright (45) provided the only real early impetus to the
innings with a series of strong shots down the ground and square of the wicket but unfortunately lacked support at the
other end for much of his innings.

Witty and Mayet both followed without score to the excellent Bushey opener, Mendiratta (4-18) and Saints were int trouble at 65-6.
Hicks (24) continued his good form with the bat from the previous week and the 3s were hopeful that he could complete a
“day out” by shepherding the side home but Bushey continued to bowl with good discipline (Herts over 50’s and Colombian (yes, Colombian) over 50’s captain, Reid
contributed 2-12) combined with poor batting from the rest of the Saints order resulted in the 3s being bowled out for
109 inside 31 overs to lose by 19 runs.

A disappointing outcome with the 3s with the collective batting effort again proving the difference. But spirits remained
high after an excellent bowling and fielding effort and in a very tight division there is more than enough time for a
resurgence in the second half of the season.
