Harpenden CC 4th XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 27 Jun 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report After a disappointing result against Bushey last week, the 3s headed to Harpenden looking to bounce back. Lightning struck again for skipper Telkman, who continued his hot streak with the coin and won the toss, electing to bat first on what looked like a decent deck.

The innings got off to a steady start, with openers Hingston and Rudlin grinding out a 31-run partnership to see off the worst of the new ball before Hingston was caught, spooning the ball to long leg. Deb’s subsequent stay at the crease was unfortunately brief, falling without troubling the scorers to a ball that jagged back substantially, bringing Sam Street to the middle. Both bats absorbed some intense pressure before playing some lovely shots in an important partnership, before Streety was bowled for 17, the ball rolling back onto the stumps after he played onto his pad in a case of scarcely believable bad luck.

At 83-3, the platform was there, but the loss of wickets at regular intervals stalled the momentum; Rudders fell short of a deserved half-century for 39, and Andy Wright (16) followed shortly after, leaving the middle order with plenty of rebuilding to do. Ashish Dean struck a few crisp blows for his 13, but when he fell, it left us stuttering at 126-6 and at risk of falling short of a competitive total.
Thankfully, the lower order showed some fight, the combined experience of Tooley (18) and Telks (15) putting together a crucial 34-run partnership to push the score toward respectability, with a potentially generous umpiring call from Wrighty helping the cause. A chaotic flurry at the death and a generous helping of 28 extras guided us to a, we felt, competitive 177-9 from 40 overs, with Shaw run out on the final delivery of the innings for 10 trying to scamper an extra run.

We took to the field knowing a disciplined bowling display was required. Although Telks was able to find his rhythm and keep things tight, Magee struggled for consistency and was put to the sword from the outset, the short boundary being targeted, meaning the skipper had to quickly turn to Shaw to take the pace off and try to stem the flow of runs. In an inspired change, he tore through the top order, removing both openers in quick succession, leaving the game was wide open at 56-2. The Harpenden batsmen then wrestled back control for the hosts with a 37-run stand before Shaw claimed his third victim, finishing with figures of 3-46 and leaving them 93-3. Alongside this, Ash also bowled a very tidy spell (2-32) - including a sharp caught-and-bowled to keep us in the hunt - however, scoreboard pressure wasn't high enough and the hosts eased over the line in the 31st over.

Another defeat hurts, especially after a gritty effort with the bat given our recent struggles, however, we were ultimately a few short in hindsight and weren’t able to consistently hit the mark with the ball enough to build pressure. It leaves us with plenty to do with just over half the season left.
