St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Redbourn CC 3rd XI on Sat 04 Jul 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets
Match report
With the 3s fast approaching ‘must win’ territory and a rousing mid week WhatsApp speech from team captain / the 2s premier batter, West, the 3s arrived at early CP for a net on Saturday morning ahead of the game against local rivals, Redbourn.
A highly efficient set up at SLCG and only a few choice comments about returning Rayden’s new arrival on his top lip, was followed by one of the best warm up routines in living memory - not a set of whites in sight. Telkman failed to win the toss for the first time in more than a month but, with the threat of violence from team members encamped under the marquee, was relieved when the away skipper elected to bowl first in the heat.
Telkman, heralding back to c. 2007 t20 blast tactics, decided to employ a designated pinch hitter up top to take the game to the oppo in the early afternoon sun. Several contenders were considered but Curran eventually got the nod after reminding the skipper of his Chess Valley exploits at the top of the order earlier that season.
JC raised hopes with an early boundary over deep square but unfortunately fellow opener, Deb, fell in the opening over to once again leave the 3s feeling slightly nervous about posting a score. A common theme of the season. Those fears were not allayed when JC fell shortly after for 5; trying to play inside out over extra and chopping into his stumps. An all too familiar pattern continued as Street and Wright also fell for low scores and Saints were 4 down with less than 50 on the board. Ash (30) and O’Toole (36) played nicely and with maturity (despite O’Toole being responsible for Telkman being run out for the second successive week) but had to little support to enable Saints to post a strong total. 121 all out off 37 overs on a good pitch with a fast outfield likely 50 short of what was needed.
Despite the disappointing first innings, Saints took to the field fuelled by Tavah rolls with hopes of skittling the oppo. Telkman and Curran opened up an immediately induced false shots but these were accompanied by a few loose balls that were well pounced on by the opening bats. Telkman made the initial breakthrough having one opener caught at first slip by an enthusiastic Murphy. Rosson bowled tightly and was well supported by Shaw who once again showed his class by picking up two further wickets to keep Saints in touch. But careful batting saw the away side steadily accumulate to within 30 runs of victory with 7 wickets in hand. Murphy, from the Sandpit Lane end, bowled with guile and was rewarded with a sharp caught and bowled that was shortly followed by a superb piece of fielding by Dean who threw down the stumps from mid off to run out the set bat. Shaw, Rosson and Murphy continued to contain the batters but in truth didn’t have enough runs to defend and despite another run out, Redbourn got to the target with 4 wickets and overs in hand. Too comfortable for Saints’ liking. Runs are the currency that the 3s need to find if they are to now avoid relegation.
