St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Northwood Town CC, Middlesex 2nd XI on Sat 11 Jul 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 31 runs

Match report As the never-ending heatwave baked the home of cricket for another Saturday, Sam Street failed in his first assignment captaining the 3rd XI and lost the toss. Fearing the worst, he was delighted to hear “we’ll have a bowl please mate.”

Stu Murray and Ben Hingston made a solid start to the innings before both were unlucky to fall in the 6th and 7th over respectively. Murray caught by a sharp catch in the gully playing one of his signature cut shots. Hingston kicking away a grade A worm burner in front of all three stumps. This brought Debs and Daiwik to the middle. They combined for a well-made 47 run partnership, the key being some great running between the wickets. Tough work for the fielding side in the 2pm sun.
It wouldn’t be a 3rd XI fixture without a batting collapse and 74-2 quickly became 106-6. Two points to note within this period - Debs departed for 47 (jug avoidance punished accordingly in the fines circle) and Ethan Witty who edged behind, unaware of the ball’s location, began to run and was dismissed “run out” off the wicketkeeper’s knee whilst standing back…

Street (occupying the trademarked “Tooley” role) and debutant Charlie Knight rebuilt before accelerating towards the back end of the innings. Knight quickly acclimatised to the Sandpit Lane idiosyncrasies and was striking the ball sweetly, most notably for a gorgeous six over long on, the unanimous shot of the day winner. The partnership of 72 between Street and Knight, followed by some late scrambling from the rest of the line-up, took the 3s to a total of 195, our highest total posted at Sandpit Lane since 21st June 2025. Knight departed for an excellent 45 from 44 deliveries. Rules are rules and the end of season curry pot grew once again.

Rousted by some half-time “lucky” jelly babies, as has become tradition across Street’s previous captaincy reigns, energy was high as the 3s searched for early wickets and they came in the form of two beautiful inswinging deliveries from PD, notably clean bowling dangerman Vaghela in the 3rd over, the individual who had taken the game away from us in the reverse fixture. PD was ably supported by Witty with the new ball, threatening the outside edge on several occasions with no reward. The introduction of Debs and Telks brought a further 3 wickets, and at 70-5 at the halfway stage, the 3s were on top.

A solid partnership between Pondha and Patel kept Northwood in the game, despite the efforts of Ubed Talha whose figures don’t reflect how well he bowled through the middle of the innings. Looking for a breakthrough, Street turned to Knight and Murray. Knight soon removed Pondha, forcing a false shot after some accurate bowling. Murray then followed in the subsequent over, clean bowling the set Patel. Knight made light work of the Northwood tail, although PD’s spectacular catch to remove Shah must get a special mention. Having run in from the long on boundary, PD slightly misjudged the flight of the ball and then proceeded to jump a staggering distance off the ground before snaffling the two-handed catch well above his head.

Knight’s 6.3-0-26-4 capped off an excellent debut performance and wrapped up a 31-run victory. Attention now turns to next Saturday where we face another fellow relegation rival, Radlett. The 3s are back.
