Bushey CC 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 2XI on Sat 09 May 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 13 runs
Match report
Bushey is at best a rather interesting place to play cricket. You have to drive up an extraordinarily narrow path to get to the ground, and the path was the only thing that really resembled a strip (Macca certainly saw some similarities to a strip as his initial assessment of the ground). Walked out to see the pitch, took a few goes but eventually found it. Lost the toss and bowled first (although this was the preferred choice either way). The warmup was so shambolic you could have been forgiven in thinking that you'd turned up to the wrong game. Bad starts.
Banksy took the new ball, asked for the end he wanted, then started the season with a nice full toss. He settled into his rhythm and bowled a spell that was absolutely cursed not to get a wicket, beating the bat endlessly while the odd one rolled (causing havoc for Caswell and Rosson behind the stumps). Charlie Smith at the other end does what Charlie Smith always does, blowing them out but letting them swing in late. St Albans toiled for a wicket, eventually Smith getting the breakthrough with one that crept under the bat.
We continued to be frustrated as extras kept accumulating, but Winfield made the next breakthrough and Monis Haris snagged an important wicket before drinks. 3 down and Bushey decidedly the happier side. Winners and Monis kept the runs down well, Monis in particular with a tidy spell that frustrated the batters. The fielding sharpened up but we needed a moment of magic, and Caswell delivered. Winners bowled (another) ball down leg, Cas had the bails off before the batter could even move, their umpire gave him. This started a bit of a fightback, Winners trapping their next bat LBW first ball and Yusuf cashing in, a well-deserved wicket after a good spell. Winners completed his 4fer with the wicket of their dangerous left hander, caught at long on by Law, then we got to the tail.
It's probably fair to say we slightly switched off at this point. Yusuf had bowled 8 very good overs but chucked a couple of no balls in at their number 9, then dropping the easiest caught and bowled in the history of caught and bowleds. Smith also spilled one at mid-wicket. Eventually, Banksy and Smith cleaned up the tail, bowling figures balanced and everyone impressing. 191 to chase, a tough target at Bushey and the 54 extras staring at us from the scorecard, how decisive that turned out to be.
Perrin and Deb walked out to bat, Deb 4 and out, Rosson 5 and out. Pez and Cas steadied the ship, taking us to drinks 2 down with a variety of shot making, Cas with his trademark gubbing, Pez with some glorious strokes. 130/2, surely even the 2nd XI can't lose from here? Insert Mick McCarthy. Cas eventually fell for 34, a good knock, and Perrin fell not long after bowled by a knuckle ball (he described it as "a seed", no one else did). Law hit some balls at fielders then decided to do it in the air instead of on the floor, Jithin and Monis to save the day. Monis probably unlucky to be out LBW, Macca not hearing the edge, then the tail collapsed to their change bowler who bowled quite fast, full and straight, leaving St Albans 13 short of their target.
A sobering day out against a strong side, but St Albans showed more fight than in previous seasons. On the whole, the fielding was good, the bowling and batting weren't terrible, and the energy wasn't too bad either. Just small improvements in all of the above and we can challenge in this league. Get practicing for next week's donut eating competition (the Hemel leg spinner the wearer of the crown). Many thanks to Macca for selflessly giving up his time to umpire for us, saving us 5 points.
