Reed CC 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 20 Jun 2026 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report The longest journey of the season awaited the 1s in a crucial encounter vs Reed. With just 8 points separating the top 4
and all playing each other this week, it was the first chance to really gain an upper hand on the league. Overcast and a
fairly green deck all signs pointed to a bowl first. Unfortunately that decision was taken out our hands and we were
stuck in.

From there not a lot went right. Jamie got a howler of a decision, Buzz got a 20 ball duck but had managed to kick about
10 and Ashish was trapped in front the very next ball. Jones snicked a yorker into the keepers gloves, Joe was caught by
an absolute blinder at second slip and all of a sudden we were 39-5. Perrin and TMC saw out the 2 openers who had
bowled well on a tricky wicket and the change bowlers came on and offered many more loose deliveries seeing a slight
rebuild before Tom was castled trying to hit the ball into Royston.

We then for the only point in our batting innings gained the upper hand for a spell as Perrin and Josh put away some
fairly average bowling from Reed, including losing the ball which proved fatal as the replacement was at least 2 times the
amount of overs old meaning it was impossible to get away and didn’t bounce on an already tricky surface. Josh was
caught again fairly spectacularly at mid wicket leaving Perrin to bat with the tail. Perrin it must be said batted superbly
well in tough conditions and his 45 was probably worth double all things considered. Sadly he wasn’t particularly well
supported by the lower order, both Rooney and Adshead succumbed to deliveries that rolled past their ankles and
Baylis was left stranded when Perrin was adjudged LBW as another rolled onto his boot. 120 all out was still a fairly
dismal showing regardless of the pitch and the ball change, but with a good start we felt we could still salvage the game.

Start well we did with Rooney shooting through firstly the defences of the Reed overseas and then the number 3 sent
back the next ball after dancing at the crease and being bowled off his pads. After the opening 16 overs the majority of
the runs were extras and any runs off the bat had pretty much all been behind square. 4 came and went to make it 28-3,
yet again Rooney the recipient of a wicket, and Saints could count themselves unlucky when denied a run out in the next
over of the other Reed opener who had survived the onslaught sent down to him.

However from there we were second best as the pitch began to flatten out, the bounce became a little bit more
consistent and we made some fairly out of character mistakes. Catches went down which didn’t help but in truth by the
closing moments it had become easier to bat on and it’s fair to say we did not bowl as well as Reed did.

An unfortunately difficult day out sees us in third. A few of us can blame other factors for the ways we got out, but too
many of us threw it away, and we didn’t bowl tightly enough or field anywhere near well enough.

The Reed groundsmanapologising for the state of the wicket at the end of the game the smallest of consolations, but plenty to work on to
regain our place in the top 2 between now and September.
