Match report A promotion battle fixture verses Amptill Town was on the cards for Saturday, which saw the 1s with much changed team from the week before, including the like-for-like replacements of West and Howeson for Regan squared at the top of the order.

The cooler weather much appreciated by several members of the side who began their warm up for the game the night before in the Boot (… and Veeda). With the extremely early meet time catching out several members of the team, including the Captain himself, the warm up proceeded. Saints were looking good, including Bruno, who thought it appropriate to join in chasing balls! A pitch inspection proceeded and 270 deemed to be a par. Skipper Baylis of course won the toss and elected to bat.

Regan Jr and Bancroft got us off to a good start. Both good and bad balls sent to the boundary over an extremely fast outfield at CP. The quick scoring continued with Ash after the fall of Bancroft for 19 and Saints found themselves 100 – 1 off not many. Regan Jr, Ash and Regan Snr then all fell quickly to the Amptill leg spinner with what looked like some decent bowling from the sidelines. It then became clear that pace off was the way to go on the CP wicket and Amptill figured that out quickly. They rotated several of their spinners around and restricted Saints well with tight bowling and good fielding. Priyesh and McCormick provide some resistance toward the latter stages of the innings, but this wasn’t helped when McCormick decided to roll his ankle. If only he knew a physio.... The tail also chipped in with some lovely shots from Monis in the last over of the innings, with Saints ending up on a below par 210 off their 50 overs.

Whilst 210 was not the total Saints were hoping for, Amptill had showed us the blueprint on how to bowl on the CP pitch. Jones and Baylis started proceedings with tight lines and lengths. Jones was rewarded early to remove the opener. Half chances were then created… and missed off Jones, including Priyesh being too small at gulley and Baylis trying to catch with his ankles at point, both of which did not best please the fast bowler.

Winfield was then brought onto bowl. With his 1st over consisting off 11 balls and Claire quickly ran out of room in her scorebook, he did somehow manage to claim a wicket of the number 3 before quickly being removed from the attack. What followed was a demonstration of how to bowl at CP, with Adshead and Monis putting on a masterclass of control in line and length. Adshead struck 1st to remove the set opener with lovely ball nipping back through the gate; with Monis then following up to remove the Amptill captain to claim his 1st 1XI wicket. Huge congratulations to Monis!!! 34 overs in and Saints had restricted Amptill to 117-4 and the game was still in the balance.

What followed was not ideal, the next 4 overs going for 16, 10, 15 and 13, all pressure was released. The Amptil Australian sending balls to the boundary for fun and the game was all but done. A few easy singles later and a disappointing result for the boys, but with 7 games left and it all to play for, the promotion push begins now!
