Cockfosters CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 16 May 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
Arriving in good to time experience a thorough warm up is the optimal approach. The
fours travelled to Cockfosters and did just that - enjoying the myriad benches
provided by the oppo as we sat and watched Cockfosters toiling with fielding and
bowling drills.
A portent of things to come?
On inspection the pitch appeared a decent wicket, albeit one with a covering of
grass and a couple of damp-looking patches. Looking up the skip saw overcast
conditions, a sure sign of success for his army of right arm over pacers…
On winning the toss, skipper Davey put Cockfosters in - a decision broadly backed
by the team.
A small crisis was averted as opening bowler Uvanesh had forgotten his whites -
luckily Davey had come preprepared for this eventuality and had a spare set.
Opening duties were shared with PD, and the first 21 balls of the match passed
without a run being scored. Bowlers on top one might think…unfortunately Uva
pulled up with a tight hamstring in the fifth over and was unable to continue his spell.
Davey took over and Martyr (93) and Stead (61) found their stride. Martyr in particular
punished anything straight through the leg side, trusting the trueness of the wicket
and beginning to find the boundary with some regularity.
Chances were hard to come by, and not always clear cut when they did come - edges
escaping the grasps of keeper and slips, and mishits landing safe.
At drinks Cockfosters were 101 without loss; both batters well set in the 40s.
Walks will be disappointed with a dropped caught and bowled chance from the final ball of the 20th over.
Some inspirational words from Davey at drinks to keep pushing were well
received, and the Saints set about the final twenty with renewed purpose. The first
wicket fell in the 25th over, Stead bowled Talha - Ube proving the pick of St Albans’
bowlers on the day, bowling through and ending with figures of 8 overs, one for 29.
Fielders stuck to the task well, stopping unnecessary boundaries - credit to PD for
putting in an excellent shift going long on to long on for a number of overs.
St Albans never let the run rate get out of hand, taking a couple of late wickets (one
for PD and one for Moksy), restricting Cockfosters to 222 from their 40 overs.
Although a decent score, Saints knew that with sensible batting on a true wicket,
they still had a chance.
Mahroof and Moksy opened up. Moksy looked fluent with a couple of early
boundaries, and the first five overs passed without trouble - 21 without loss.
Mahroof was finding the going a bit tougher, and chipped a return catch at the start
of the seventh over; the first of ten wickets to fall to catches. Cockfosters applied
themselves well and fielded superbly. The Cockfosters bowling was broadly
accurate, but St Albans will be kicking themselves for not seeing more of bowlers
five and six.
As the rain came down and gloom descended, the middle order
struggled and wickets fell at regular intervals. Brief respite provided by Crisp, Davey
and Talha (scores of 20, 20 and 19 respectively) occasionally offered glimmers of
hope, but the ever-increasing run rate proved too much. Talha in particular looked
destructive, blasting two huge leg side sixes - one narrowly missing a passing
London double decker, and the other clearing an extremely long boundary that very
few fours had reached during the match. Sadly he was the 9th wicket to fall - chasing
a wide, and caught behind. Not the first, and not the last dismissal in this manner -
at least six of the ten catches snaffles between keeper, slip and gully.
Dismissed after 31.1 overs for only 138, a tale of what might have been for the Saints.
7 points banked, and while disappointed with the execution on the day, optimism is
retained for the rest of the season. Cockfosters will be right up there at the
reckoning come September, we only hope the 4s of St Albans will be up there too!
