Old Owen's 4th XI v St Albans Cricket Club 6XI on Sat 05 Sep 2026 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 7 wickets
Match report
Under the watchful eye of skipper Praveen Kumar, our mighty 6XI found themselves journeying to Old Owen's for one last hurrah before the season draws to a close. Despite being begged by a very hungover Walsh to bat first, Praveen won the toss and put the Saints in to bowl, staring Walsh in the eye and telling him he's opening the bowling alongside Vish Sirwar. Walsh scowled, his hand tightening around the pint of Cruzcampo he had already bought for himself. He knocked it back, looked back at Praveen and said "give me the bloody ball then." What a cricketer. We had only managed to scrape 10 players together, but the oppo were in a similar position, and so we took to the pitch. Many thanks to Toby, father of Finn, for stepping in to help make up the numbers.
Walsh and Vish bowled some very tight spells, each bowling their 4 overs, with Vish conceding only 11 runs and Walsh conceding only 14, with a wicket to his name. The wicket came from Vivek in the covers: having just dropped a sitter two balls prior, he then performed some acrobatics to make it up to Walsh, the boys working togther to dismiss an opener for not very many. Vish claimed the scalp of the other opener, another unbelievable catch from Vivek putting Old Own's in a tough spot early on. Praveen deemed Walsh and Vish simply too good at cricket to allow this to continue, bringing on Finn Newton and fielding extraordinaire Vivek.
Vivek stole the show again, backing up his stellar fielding by claiming 3 wickets across his 3 over spell, echoing our openers in his excellent economy. Finn bowled an interesting spell from his end, with more wides than a man can count, but still managed to claim 2 wickets for himself, clean bowling both batters after lulling them into a false sense of security. Again, Praveen deemed our bowlers simply too good, and made a change to try and avoid the game ending very early. Spoiler: it still did.
The change of bowling saw Xander Molvik and Women's 1XI representative Kara Vijender try their hand. With only 2 wickets remaining, the pair bowled tight, efficient spells of a cumulative 3 overs, before Xander selfishly decided to take both the wickets for himself, thus ending the innings. Old Owen's found themselves all out for 69 (lol), with our Saints questioning if a T20 might be in order after we had batted, given it was only 2:30pm.
Back to business: Praveen nobly formed the top order of players who hadn't got a bowl in the first innings to ensure everyone got a proper game (or as close to a 'proper game' as you can have across two innings that cumulatively totted up to 28 overs). Dulon Ahmed and Toby Newton strapped on their armour and got to work. Dulon knocked a fiery 10 featuring two lovely boundary shots, before deciding batting's not for him and putting one towards the heavens. Toby kept motoring his way along, finding the boundary with ease as his partners rotated around him. Young gun Jacob Broome stepped up to try his hand, having kindly given up his bowling spell to keep wicket for us. Thankfully, the first innings was short enough that the plan for Walsh taking the gloves in the second 20 never materialised, and so Broome kept beautifully. Broome managed to pick up 2 runs for himself, before exiting to make way for our Striking Viking, Molvik. He managed to smoke a 4 into the bushes, eventually notching 8 before being sent packing by an absolute seed. Kara stepped up to see out the innings with Toby, the pair of them passing the 69 mark (lol) to bring home the bacon for the Saints. As mentioned, we proposed a T10/T20 to the oppo to make up the rest of the day, but they declined, presumably to avoid getting battered twice in one day (we're absolutely gun).
Overall, a fun, albeit overly-short, game, played in good spirits and some excellent performances in the field, with the ball and with the bat. Congrats again to Vivek: lead wicket taker and some unbelievable catches to put the game to bed early. Toby, our top runscorer, who looked set to get his maiden 50 had the total been there. Our bowlers did exceptionally well too: the reason we kept the oppo to 69 (lol) was some unbelievably tight bowling, right from the start all the way to the end. A fantastic way to round off the 6Xi season! Same again next year, one hopes.
