Old Cholmeleians I v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 07 Jul 2007 at 1.30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won
Match report
St Albans 3's got back to winning ways taking all 30 points from an under strength but competive and feisty Old Chums 1's.
St Albans won the toss and sportingly choose to bowl on an archetypally english sticky dog, allowing Old Chums to invest the first hour of the match increasing their numbers from the seven they had on hand when the toss was made.
At 60 for 6 this looked like a cracking decision but stubborn lower order batting and twenty five overs of four play and misses followed by two poor balls slapped unceremoniously to the boundary saw the score creep up and in the circumstances Old Chums did very well indeed to post a highly competitive 163 all out.
The George Cross should be awarded to the owner of the local Spa, who at 2.00 o’clock had been minding his own business serving his regulars, but by 3.00 o’clock had been press ganged into batting at number nine. Having received intense instruction on which end of the bat to hold, and the various means of dismissal he wandered to the wicket with a combination of consternation and boyish enthusiasm. To his credit he was terrific, and after sum stoic resistance and having been stumped, he eventually left the field with a mixture of relief and pride, shaking first the hand of the bowler and then most, if not all, the Saints team.
Sam MilliCheap making his debut bowled a tidy twelve over spell of left arm round and against better bats would have returned more handsome figures. Simon Galloway bowled seven overs of largely unplayable dolly plops (or as he prefers to have them referred to, “rippers”), while Chris Ellins (3-48), David Hancock (1-21), Charles Smith (2-34) and Andrew Walker (1-18) shared the remaining bowling and wickets.
A further mention in despatches is due to Sam Pullan and David Hancock. Sam returned to the side after an enforced absence due to the rather inconvenient arrival of two children should have enjoyed a spell of his own but never got the opportunity because the skipper is a doughnut, and David Hancock, who having bowled like my sister fielded at gully like a tiger.
An outsider looking in to the St Albans changing room at the break would have thought we were chasing 450 but thankfully a slice of cake, a cup of tea and the sight of a Brit and a Serb (?) getting to the final of the mixed doubles raised the spirits ahead of the second half of the contest.
Chasing 164 for victory overs were never likely to be a problem but a return of 7 runs from the first 7 overs wasn’t what anyone expected. Andy Kincaid lost his wicket attempting to get on with it as did Simon Galloway. Mick Malouf, batting at 2 dug in and slowly but surely built an impressive innings that ultimately formed the back bone of the Saints reply. Needing 100 off the last 25 overs first Tom Glinka, then Mike Eames, then Chris Ellins joined Mick, each pushing on the run rate before losing their wickets while he held down the other end.
At the start of the 43rd over Mick Malouf finally lost his wicket having accrued a handsome 63. This brought together Dave Hancock and Andy Walker, their target 35 off 35 balls. With the tension rising the two lads held their nerve, keeping out the good stuff and despatching the poor. Scoring at a little over a run a ball the guys came to the last over needing 3 to win. After a couple of dot balls and the odd nibble of nails Dave Hancock crunched a drive through extra cover and ran the three runs needed for victory.
This was a terrific win, great fun and played in a super spirit. Well done to Old Chums and well done especially to Messieurs Malouf, Hancock and Walker who saw us home
