Match report A middle order collapse was the undoing of the IIIs with a draw leaving the team in the relegation zone for the first time all year.

Facing already relegated Great Gaddesden in a match that Saints needed to win, another lost toss put us on the back foot early. Gaddesden showed admirable resolve against the openers, and with little risk made a swift start.

In truth, neither side was ever on top on a typically sluggish wicket; the scoreboard kept moving even as wickets fell. Ypey finished with the fine figures of 4/25, while Walker chipped in with 3/22, as none of the visiting bats exceeded 31 in a 52 over total of 160.

The opening stanza yielded 32 and the score moved serenely to 50, dominated by Ferguson's 34, before the great crash. In a span of 9 turgid overs, Saints fell from 50-1 to 57-6 as the middle order collectively crumbled. Now the asking rate was more than 5 an over, with just 4 wickets in hand. Intentional or otherwise, runs were stifled by some leg side bowling that was hard to put away.

However Furnival and Hicks built a partnership that gathered momentum with excellent running between wickets. Furnival was particularly able to lift the rate, and a positive result was never quite impossible. Ultimately, Furnival's departure for a well worked 53 left a little too much to do at the end, and Saints fell 11 runs short.

The draw probably reflected a fair result - all credit to Great Gaddesden's battle throughout - but was not the result Saints needed. As results filtered in from across the League, it became apparent that the IIIs were now down to 4th from bottom, with just a crucial last round battle at Radlett (only 1 point ahead of us) to come.
