Potters Bar III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 06 Sep 2014 at 12:30 pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 8 wickets

Match report Like a St Albans second team cricketer on a Saturday night, the IIIs had flirted with success but mostly found failure across this 2014 season, despite fine credentials. And so this final round encounter represented a last dance with the fates of cricket.

For Saints, the goal was simple: win at Potter's Bar, and then let relegation rivals results roll in, hoping for fewer than 9 points to be accrued by both Great Gaddesden and Baldock Town, to allow demotion to be averted at the last possible juncture.

Incredibly by 3pm, Saints had stormed to victory in a match lasting just 36 overs. An opposition team already relegated, and low on availability, couldn't hold back the persistent quality of O'Toole (an impeccable 3/14 in 13 overs) and the spirited Hay 5/16. In the field, this was an outstanding effort, not a catch dropped nor a bye conceded.

In pursuit of 56 to win, Manny set about pummelling the bowlers, to the point that his own half century was on the cards. Instead he smashed the winning runs off the first ball of the 9th over to finish a run short of a personal milestone for the second innings running.

Thus shortly after 3pm, we were able to enjoy a leisurely tea and then visit the Potter's Bar bar, before returning to Clarence Park, resting tenuously in the safety of 16th position on the league table. Job done - and now time to wait on other results, regular refreshes of the Herts League division 7 table querying our fate. 6pm brought the news we hadn't wished to hear: Great Gaddesden had lost, but managed 10 points, nudging us back to 17th. (Inexplicably, Baldock Town then nabbed 11 points in defeat to sink Gaddesden by 1 point, joining Saints in relegation.) Cries of dismay were heard from afar as Rome.

Relegation by just 2 points then: the odd run or extra wicket in any one of 13 matches might have changed our fortune. Success, on a Saturday afternoon or evening, often turns on such small things. Hopefully the extra year's experience, and the new scene of division 15, in a reconstructed League, will yield more satisfying results in 2015.
