A roasting afternoon at Clarence Park saw this St Albans side comprised of colts, retirees and other adults bunking off work play a midweek game against the veterans of Old Victorians.

The opposition batted first and suffered an early setback as Andrew Melling had their opening bat caught behind first ball . This turned out to be a somewhat false dawn as the runs started to pile on . St Albans bowled tightly with Robert Still (7-1-19-0) , Jack Ypey (10-3-22-1) the standout performers on what was clearly a pitch made for batting. With only 5 wickets conceded by the end of their innings - 2 of them falling to Andy Saunders (5-0-23-2) - Old Victorians finished with a highly competitive score of 187 .

Work to do for St Albans then and openers Rob Still and Nick James set about their business with purpose putting on a brisk opening stand of 25 before Still lost his wicket. Andrew Melling was trapped LBW wIthout scoring shortly afterwards and Cieran Walsh was clean bowled after scoring just 4 . A bit of a wobble then that needed steadying. Enter James Thompson to get things back on track with a quickfire 18 before both he and opener James (25) were dismissed in quick succession.

At this point St Albans were 85-5 with two new batsmen at the crease - the young gun Jack Ypey and the veteran Ray Blaxill. Slowly but surely this pair dragged St Albans back into the game with an intelligent partnership. Blaxill, playing the supporting role, backed up Ypey with obdurate defensive play and determined running. Ypey reached a half century and pushed on towards what would be an outstanding unbeaten maiden hundred (101 no), achieved just in time with only two runs needed for victory. 16 fours are testament to the quality of this innings , which turned what looked a hopeless cause into an unlikely victory with several overs to spare. Credit to Blaxill whose contribution of 20 in this hundred partnership was invaluable to the win.
