Match report Harpenden ran out comfortable victors in this match at St Georges School, which hindsight suggests turned on a decision made at the toss.

After an overnight downpour, Saturday offered a warm, sunny day. Electing to bat first, some gremlins in the wicket revealed themselves, accounting for perhaps three of the first four wickets to fall, and leaving Saints in something of a hole at 43/4. On the boundary line, even the home side acknowledged the pitch's dodgy state.

The Harpenden bowling was giving little away on a slow wicket, but the lower order fought hard with contributions almost to the bottom. Batting at 9, Hodges powered his way to an intelligent 33 not out, top score for the innings, and leading the way in a 9th wicket partnership of 47 that was itself the best of the innings. Saints finished on 169, all out in the 51st over, having added 60 odd in the last 10 overs to bring some credibility to the total.

However, the feeling at tea was that the gremlins noted earlier had rather disappeared, with the wicket drying out - evidenced by the success of the tail.

After an early scalp to Rajani, Saints needed to press on with more wickets to put pressure on the home side. But despite some solid work in the field, and decent efforts from all the bowlers, the match slipped away as Jones, Arnold and Marshall made light work of the chase.

With victory his, opposition captain Jones indicated that he would have bowled first had he won the toss. Undoubtedly the wicket improved considerably over the course of the afternoon, and with the wisdom brought by hindsight, perhaps the game may have turned out very differently had a different choice been made at the toss.
