Redbourn v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 28 Jun 2015 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost lost by 56 runs

Match report Sometimes even though you lose you take a lot of positives from a game .

The opposition were unbeaten this season , top of the league and had posted 300+ in all of their innings top date. Their one Sunday team was made up of Saturday first and second teamers and it was always going to be a big ask against a side who were clearly far too good for this division. After winning the toss and electing to field on a damp pitch in overcast conditions our two opening bowlers Ashish Dean and Harvey Scott immediately started to make the ball 'talk' with swing and movement off the seam and both openers struggled to score initially, with runs coming mostly from edges and mistimed shots. Scott took the first of the openers for a meagre 6 runs with a vicious inswinger which removed his middle stump . He and Dean worked hard for the first 15 overs and were unlucky not to take more wickets. Dean's figures of 7-0-24-0 in particular reflected his tight bowling . A bowling change brought young Hassan Salahin into the attack and 2 wickets fell in his first over - excellent stuff and his 5-0-20-2 demonstrated a tidy spell . Andrew Melling, bowling his first overs this season, kept it tight and Rob Still bowled his usual steady spell and was very unlucky not to take wickets as the edges kept coming and skied shots fell safely away from fielders. Dave Ashton and skipper Andy Saunders saw the innings out with Saunders cleaning up the tail with 3 late wickets in his 4 overs. Excellent fielding, which saw all catches held and 4 run outs, aligned with top 'keeping by Andy Knill-Jones should also be mentioned. Bowling out a side of this quality within the allotted 45 overs was no mean feat. Posting a total of 270 the opposition did well but not as well as against others this season.

A big ask then - Marcus Townend and Andy Knill-Jones opened for St Albans and soon the fifty partnership was up before Andy was trapped LBW on 29. Marcus went on to score a patient 49 and fell one short of a deserved half century when he clipped an ill advised shot to deep mid-on. Ashish Dean followed his 42 last week with a breezy 53 before departing and Harvey Scott could not repeat the fireworks of his previous 2 innings , the oppositions decent leg spinner snaring him on just 11. A late partnership of 27 by the two veterans Rob Still and Andy Saunders wasn't enough and ultimately with 214 on the board we ran out of overs.

So , we lost but there were many good things to take from a committed performance in which every player played their part.
